They are as useful or as useless as the user. That's a point I've been trying to make by telling people they are neither good nor bad and have no conscience.

The failure was with the Uvalde command at the Texas shooting, not the firearms. Good thing the U.S. Border Patrol did not report to the Uvalde Police. They were the good guys with the guns that went in and stopped it from being even worse.
The failure is with a culture who lives in perpetual fear. Americans are a nation of people living in fear. Guns are a crutch to the worst of the cowards.

Americans live in a very, very large country with a lot of people. The people who are of very diverse economic means just to begin with. When you live in Gross Pointe, MI and you literally have crashing poverty two streets down, it is not fear that forces you to acquire a firearm, it's good sense- not unlike people in the north who live with polar bears.

Exactly. If you want to protect kids you posts armed guards at schools like you would at the Parliament building.
And make sure they don't run away when the shooting starts.

The moron is charge has done it again.

All those shootings in Toronto that are the result of illegal guns obtained from the USA are still going to occur. Absolutely nothing is going to change.

FWIW: " And gun violence accounted for less than three percent of all violent crime reported to police in 2020, according to Statistics Canada. "

Yes, don't forget armed guards for afterschool programs.
Armed guards for sportsball events.
Armed guards walking to school.
Armed guards for malls.
Armed guards for the armed guards.
Armed guards for dog walking
Armed guards for parks....

You can believe that if you want and rant limitlessly about it, but there will be another mass shooting in Canada, despite the laws.

Nobody knows when or where, but the sad truth is that one day there will be another thread just like this one where people will cry that something needs to be done.

Why? Because the underlying issue of mental health isn't being fixed and we share a border with a country that provides over 80% of the illegal firearms in Canada.

Live your life and don't worry about it too much. The odds are it won't be you or anyone you know.
You're repeating your arguments and they're flawed. Despite there being rape laws in Canada, there will be more rapes. That doesn't mean laws against rape are ineffective in controlling it. It means that contraventions to all laws are inevitably going to occur.

The answer is not to say "Hell, 20 new rape cases last week in Toronto alone! That law is useless. Time to scrap it and let men rape whenever they want to because it's all about "Liberty"! And let's talk about mental health counseling for rapists as a solution, not the criminal justice system."

Are mass murderers "sick"?... Sure. It's non normative social behaviour, so by definition a "sickness". But all countries contain angry sociopaths, some of whom might be amenable to treatment and some of those treatable might also come to the attention of the authorities in a situation where they can be required to accept treatment. That's a lot of "ifs and maybes". Generally sociopathy is considered untreatable.

But it's not about practicality. The goal for people like you is to come up with arguments that desperately and at all costs avoid accepting that gun control is a valid and necessary legal goal. And today's buzz phrase is that "it's a mental health problem, not a gun control propblem". That's like other bullshit slogans like "arm the teachers!" No one seriously thinks it's a solution. It's just a way of deflecting criticism of the lack of gun control by spinning some useless bullshit.

If mental health is the problem, why do US sociopaths mass murder and Dutch sociopaths not?.... Oh that's because there's gun control in Holland and fuck all gun control in the USA.

Yes I can, but I'm not going to because I'm tired of spoon feeding you.
There's nothing preventing you from looking it up yourself.
Dude, please. Do you think that the audience for your endless technical arguments about gun mechanics on this board might be limited just to you alone?

Answers like this, meaning that you have no answer to a simple question, reinforce the fact that you are clearly being out-debated. Having a solid retort to bc's question, as opposed your "d'uh, I don't know" would work toward advancing your narrative..

The cynical answer to your comments is - unfortunately - "because they shoot Palestinians instead."

Lack of gun control in the USA is only part of the problem. There's also a "gun worship" problem. Every goddam wimp-nerd GOP politician poses with his wife and kids carrying his immense gun collection and swaggering. Guns are portrayed in right wing US culture as desirable in themselves and if you have a prized gun collection, you're going to want to use it. For most, it's shooting the guns off at the range. For a few, it's going hunting. And for an angry micro minority, it's killing other humans.

Add to that the anger and bigotry that is channeled on the internet and you're going to get mass killings.

ROTFLMFAO!!! The "right wing gun culture"- that's a good one. Turn on the TV or go to the movies- a constant stream of gun violence from the woke Hollywood. Don't slip a nipple, but brains exploding in "bullet time"? That's just family entertainment. Pathetic.

seriously?
I've been seeing some disturbing videos on Twitter about Jewish political street gangs and there's the recent murder of that Palestinian journalist. I normally stay away from Israeli-Palestinian threads, but some of the video footage is pretty scary.
