I'm probably not going to get this all right, but there is a belief shared by evangelical Christians and jews that there are a finite number of souls in something called the Guf. Every time a child is born, the number goes down. When all the souls are done, the world will end. However, if the child is aborted, the soul isn't used. That is why they are so gonzo silly about abortion. They basically want to end the world quicker....

So, that sort of explains why they are so big on having the child, but then do absolutely NOTHING with post-natal care. They don't help feed the child, provide a good education, health care or even leave for the mom to recover...

On a side note, there was a movement in, I think Ireland or England, to force everyone to stop having sex to prevent more babies from being born. The idea was that if humans died out, the end of days would come sooner and they could be embraced by god. The Church basically put a stop to that, and it is one reason why catholics are so pro-birth. They believe god wanted everyone to have huge families.

However, it's unlikely to be much of an election issue. The blue states, and I would predict most purple states, will still permit abortions. The red states will ban or significantly limit them. However, voters in red states overwhelmingly support that, and as a result will not likely flip their votes over the issue.
