The upside with Gio is that he played 5 seasons as a defensive partner to TJ Brodie, so lots of familiarity there. I'm also hoping for a long shot swing at Fleury. He could be the final piece of the puzzle for this team to really make a very serious challenge this post-season.
Fleury to Minnesota.

Fleury to Minnesota.
Looks like the Hawks didn't really give up anything in return, and wiped his salary off the books. For Fleury to have come to the Leafs, guessing CHI would have had to retain some amount of salary for it to work.

One of the talking heads on TSN this morning was musing that the Leafs will make the playoffs as a WC and meet the Panthers in Round 1.

The Leafs needed to do more.

I'll root for them, but I think they're toast. They may win a round or two, but that's it.

They are not built for playoff hockey, not HNL playoff hockey. Tavares is showing his age, so is Spezza. Goaltending if its good, may save the Leafs a 4 game exit. Giordano will follow Foligno, into the veteran graveyard who followed a reacquired Gilmour, who followed a reacquired Clarke

No one is going to pick him up, if they happens, he goes to the AHL and his salary doesn't count against the cap.
You can only bury $900,000 or some amount very close to that when a player gets sent to minors. The rest still counts against your cap — so nearly 3 million. You used to be able to bury everything but that changed a number of years ago.

Late Day EDIT - in the end, looks like CHI did keep 50% of Fleury's salary.

Still worth it...

Not to mention other great defensemen who had short late season stints as a Leaf with nothing to show for it, like Brian Leetch, Phil Housely, and Calle Johannson.

Brian Leetch was not in his prime when he came over but he still played really well. I didn't really appreciate how talented he was until he came to the Leafs, tremendous hockey IQ.

Owen Nolan as I recall was picked up before the trade deadline over a decade ago. His first shift resulted in a career ending injury. Another Leaf addition to the veteran’s graveyard.

On another note, this could possibly the worst year for the Leafs to face the Panthers or Bolts. They're such strong teams. If the Leafs have to be considered underdogs in a match up against them.

Yes, you can add Carolina in that and the New York Rangers have quietly become a top team, plus Pittsburgh, Boston and Washington are always tough...

Truth is, the Leafs are likely only the 7th or 8th best team in the eastern conference. That doesn't bode well for playoffs unless Campbell suddenly zeroes in on his game and gets very hot, which in itself is a long shot. If you're Matthews, Marner, Reilly, and Willy you're probably in super-duper disappointment mode right now.
