He's the best player in the league after McDavid.
I get it, but it's in the heat of the moment after repetitive abuse, it wasn't like he went after him.
Aside from the optics, it wasn't that bad.
I got into a hostile altercation on the ice once,
I went to crosscheck him in the mouth but I hit him in the throat.
I didn't mean to hit him in the throat but things happen sometimes.
I love tough physical hockey but I don’t want to see cross check to the neck or head, check into the boards from behind, knee on knee, etc as these plays could lead to serious injuries. With that said, I’d give Matthews the benefit of the doubt that he was targeting the neck as he’s not known to be a dirty player. Naturally my opinion is biased so I don’t expect everyone to agree.
NHL doesn’t protect the star players the way that NBA does so stars like McDavid and Matthews take a lot of abuse. I remember a game earlier in the season Matthews got rag dolled and he didn’t do anything except laughing when he got up. I criticized him for that. I was actually happy to see the emotions that he’s been showing lately.

In today's game, you can't hit ANYBODY fair or foul without having to fight somebody in a response...
I hate the fact that players have to defend themselves for laying out a clean hit. The reality though is stated in that video, your top players have to be protected and there's a certain amount of intimidation to ensure they get the room to do their stuff. Whether people like it or not, there's a law of the jungle to some extent. I think the Leafs get boned every year in the playoffs by officiating, but it's been the same for how many years? You have to do what you need to do to win.
It's nice that we have talented players but we get outmuscled every single year.
I love that Matthews is going out there throwing his weight around because nobody else is doing it and he's trying to raise the bar.
This guy's a winner and he wants to win, and now guys in here are chirping him because he's sucky and dirty.
I'd still like to know. Can anyone justify Matthews getting a 2 game suspension for his cross-check and Chara only got a $5,000 fine for his?
Leafs acquire Giordano from the Seattle Kraken for draft picks, trade Dermott to the Canucks for a draft pick. Mrazek on waivers with Clifford. Robertson sent down the Marlies. Feels like there will be more to come from the Leafs before Monday 3pm
I would have liked to see a bigger and more physical guy than Giordano. I hope that you're right about the more to come.
If Chara was in a Leafs uniform he would get suspended, the reason why the Leafs should not acquire Chara, plus Chara is old and slower now.
The upside with Gio is that he played 5 seasons as a defensive partner to TJ Brodie, so lots of familiarity there. I'm also hoping for a long shot swing at Fleury. He could be the final piece of the puzzle for this team to really make a very serious challenge this post-season.
