Was nice to see Willy and JT pick up goals last night, even if it was against the 3rd worst team in the league. Maybe it will be the confidence spark that gets them rolling in time for the playoffs, because at $7M and $11M respectively, their 9 goals and 6 goals in the 27 games since Jan 1, their lack of production should be a concern.

Question: If the Leafs don't make a major move for a solid, playoffs quality goalie next week, how do they explain another lost season to the core players who are having arguably career seasons that with a reasonable shot at a cup in their sights, you didn't go all in to support them?

Good question. If it's a lost season because of goaltending, the core may have the morale of a Russian soldier.

Great analogy!

Goalies were never the issue, its the defense imho. You need guys who play the line - that's it. Defense will always win - its been said over the years....oh and a hot goalie :p at the right time.

That sounds like the Montreal model. Goalie, defense, forwards and specialty teams in that order.

Montreal value goalies so highly they even drafted

They got rid of Andersen because they needed a cheaper starting goalie.
There's no way they would have banked on Campbell as an unproven starting goalie over Andersen and his track record.
It's a better narrative for darts the other way.

LOL. Why haven't they used it for the past 30 years?

Because they have not had good management. Good management is more important than your fantasy system, of which you are still the only person in the world that has ever spoken of it.

Good management acquires good players as witnessed by the systems of Tampa, Chicago and Pittsburgh over the last 20 years. Their system works better.

"There have been only seven goaltenders in league history who have won the Hart Trophy. The last was Montreal’s Carey Price in 2015, preceded by Jose Theodore in 2002, Dominik Hasek in 1997 and 1998, Jacques Plante in 1962, Al Rollins in 1954, Charlie Rayner in 1950 and Roy Worters in 1929."

Patrick Roy never won the Hart but did win the Conn Smythe (2) and Vezina (3) as a Hab.

"At the conclusion of his five-year tenure with the Maple Leafs, Andersen left the club as a free agent. On 28 July 2021, he was signed to a two-year, $9 million contract with his original draft club, the Carolina Hurricanes"

Meanwhile the Leafs are paying Petr Mrazek $3.8mm for this and the next two years and has a no movement/no trade clause as a backup. Jack Campbell is making $1,650,000 and will be an UFA after this year.

They went with Campbell over Andersen in last years playoffs.

Yes, this would suggest Campbell was number 1 and Andersen was backup.

Presumably, Andersen is happy with the Hurricanes. His record so far this year would seem to indicate that.

I would rather see a team that can physically crush their opponents rather than try to dance around them. This Leaf team is built to win an AHL championship.

They didn't really have a ton of choice - Andersen had been injured and was trying to play though it, wasn't having any success, and wound up on the bench as the Leafs rolled the dice hoping Campbell staying solid though a weak Canadian division playoff run. They didn't bank on MTL and the dream playoffs they wound up having. In then end, they didn't have the cap space available to sign him for this year.

Dirty play by Matthews cross checking Dahlin in the head/neck. Will cost him. The more I see of this side of him, the more of a big suck he seems.
