CBC Marketplace aired this great report on companies involved in HVAC scams. It's scary how they can put a lien on your house without your knowledge.

A friends mom keeps getting emails from different companies about "Energy Rebates" and supposed government programs to lower energy prices. If you click on the link, you need to schedule the in-home appointment to "audit" your house.

I'm going to send this link because it's obviously a scam. I figured it was a high-pressure sales pitch for a new furnace and tankless hot water heater etc.

I saw this last night, that SOB should be thrown in jail. The worst part of this scam is that the sheet you sign makes you acknowledge that the can put a lien of $15.000 on your house.

The scammers can scam in part because there was real and very lucrative program available from Natural Resources Canada that paid you up to $5000 to put in a heat pump, solar panels, windows or new insulation. That ended at the beginning of February. In Ontario, Enbridge supplemented that program, so those on Enbridge could get up to $10,000 total. There will be a new program announced in Ontario, through Enbridge over the next month, but it won't be as rich. You do need to have a professional energy assessment to take advantage of these programs. Scammers come around with something that sounds like the legit program, but is not. Just go on the government websites if you are not sure if it is real or scam.
There is also a $10,000 interest free 10yr loan still available from the Federal Government (through CMHC) that you can use for energy savings, and again, you need the energy audit. Scammers never mention that! I'll answer questions if you have any.

When I need big home repairs I usually go by word of mouth recommendations. Family and friends are a great resource.
