Pros and cons of minimalist living

When I was younger I would want nice cars and lots of friends. I would care what people thought of me. Trying to impress others needing there approval. I felt insecure if I drove or wore cheap or old car/clothes. Then over time I stopped feeling this way. I began to enjoy the quiet life without many friends or possessions. Riding the bike or taking the bus versus driving a car. Wearing clothes I like not to follow the trends. Just keeping to myself and not getting involved in other people's affairs or business. A simple almost hermit like life I found brought me the most joy.

Me too. But I know I have been copping out.

The pro is you don't have as much stuff. The con, on the other hand, is that you don't have as much stuff - really tough choice...

The older I get the more I have simplified my life. Simple but good quality clothes, car, audio & video equipment, etc.

My possessions used to own me lol. A huge vinyl and cd collection plus guitars and amps, etc., etc., that I would have to lug with me every time I moved. Ripped the music to my computer and iPod, then sold the vinyl and cd's, and most of the guitars and amps.

As far as friends I have my grown-up kids who I see for dinner once or twice a week. Otherwise the only companionship I need is satisfied by the ladies I see as escorts and mpa's, though I have no illusions about the true depth of those relationships.

At this point in my life I have absolutely no desire to date, and to paraphrase the old Groucho Marx "joining a club" joke, I would never want to date a woman who would want to date me!

OldStud you mentioned "cons" in the thread title, but not in the body of your post. What are the current "cons" to you?

Sorry probably feeling poor at times or being judged but it bothers me much less than it used to. Thanks for your input!

I endorse this view. However, it kind of rules out attracting women or having families. Regardless, most Canadians are now living alone. I believe the turning point was 2016 according to Statscan.

Maybe you are right...however ....I would suggest that driving (really driving) a fine car is one of life's true pleasures and can be enjoyed by both young and old.

I can't suggest taking the bus, streetcar or subway, get better as one ages. I did it as a student. That was far and away enough of public transport for me.

Maybe the open road, but in the city, with congestion and parking problems, whether it is an Aston Martin or a Toyota Corolla. Still sitting in a traffic jam. Taking public transport is bliss compared to that.

Open road driving is a true pleasure, but using a car in the city beats public transport by a country mile in my books.

Riding a bike beats driving a car in the city 8/10 times.
(except for those 2/10 times with crappy weather)
You didn't consider my criteria: Comfortable seats, Good sound System and Climate Control. Last time I checked, bikes have none of those.

... and exercise
There are people who don't even walk on escalators and look at their phones instead.
There are also drivers who look at their phones.
I drive but prefer to take the bike in the city.

One can die from plane crash so stop flying.
One can get food poisoning so stop eating.

Yes, I didn't consider your criteria.
But if that's the primary concern I'd suggest you stay home on your couch.
Why? I Like to travel the world. That of course doesn't preclude being comfortable. Driving a car, a good car, to see and visit wonderful places is an absolute pleasure.

driving doesn't mean you can't also own and ride a bike
You probably also don't ski , snowboard, or play ice hockey because it's too cold and not comfortable.
