you could say the same about marner, and bill nylander.;)
Not really.
As I read it, the Ritchie comment alludes to a player who makes no contribution and is practically worthless.
Marner and Nylander are good players that are part of the core but overpaid, big difference.

I risk stating the obvious. Current salary $1,650,000. UFA in 2022.
Wasn't it you who was going on about the Montreal system and how it starts with a goalie?
Well, we got us a goalie, and he's playing great and winning games, and everyone loves him, what's wrong with that.

Just pointing out he deserves and probably expects a big raise when he becomes an UFA in 2022. He's currently making only $1,650,000 (less than 1/2 of what his backup makes). Where will Dubas get the money? The cap has been frozen for the past 3 years. Will there be an increase for 2022-23?

Those are questions left for another time, I don't see the point in casting a cloud over something positive that's happening in real time.
Matthews may not sign when his deal is up, are you going to make that the focus while he does great things in Toronto?

I only raise the issue because Campbell is in the final year of his current contract. Maybe the Leafs should be talking to him sooner rather than later about a contract extension to lock him up.

"From section 50.5(f) of the CBA:
A player can only sign an extension in the final year of their contract"

Just like the Raptors before Kawhi (and Ibaka and Gasol), the Leafs still don’t have “it” as Paul Pierce so aptly said. The “it” is the fear factor an opposing team has in terms of how they match up not only talent wise but, more importantly, physically. The Leafs can win a regular season game with just 13 hits as they did against Tampa, but they will wilt (pun intended) again in the playoffs when the intensity ramps up.
Been a blue & white die heart for as long as I can remember and agree that in past year that they didn’t intimate many teams, but this year there is a distinct difference in the makeup of the team and the players they added. They do have more grit today then in years past. If they get into the playoff’s they will be a team that will not be easy to play against. Let’s see what happens.

Who the hell knows what will happen, but one indicator supporting your supposition is that so far this year they are 8-0 (maybe 9-0?) when leading after 2 periods. As opposed to last year when they were blowing teams out of the water early and coasting through the third, they've had a lot of tight/one goal leads against some very good teams and holding on. They may be learning how to play 60 minute games.

Poor scarred Leaf fans with PTSD can’t learn to enjoy the moment when they are doing really well, always fearing a game can end badly any time.

It's called being realistic. And you know that the flip side of the coin was that if there was optimism you'd be reminding everybody of what happened in the past.

So what you say means diddly because you will criticize no matter what the circumstance.

It was a very workmanlike game. Isles only got about 20 shots for the game. Actually, I think it was the same style of game that they played last night against the Pens, but the Pens were just better at it.

And the kid looked great. Very focussed, yet composed.

Isles missing 6 regulars due to covid. So the Leafs beat another AHL team.

So what should Leafs do let 6 of their regulars get covid? Not the Leafs fault the Isles can't follow covid protocol. They already lost to the AHL pens. It is what it is.

He makes it seem like the Leafs are the only team that occasionally plays against depleted rosters.

In the meantime, all I said was that they played a workmanlike game. The Leaf fan bashers will interpret that to mean that I said the Leafs will win the rest of the regular season games and 16 straight in the playoffs.

So? If they had lost tonight some would be saying they lost to an AHL team. The Leafs don't make the schedule and they didn't infect the Islanders with Covid. Games like this come up and you have to win them. They did.

And don't forget they've also taken out Tampa Bay, Philadelphia, Calgary, Boston, the Rangers and Nashville recently too....
...on the way to 11-2 in their last 13. I didn't realise that there so many AHL teams in the NHL.
