European countries do just fine despite a more "extreme" version of anything socialistic being proposed in the USA.
Totalitarianism in the USA right now is a much bigger threat.

Damn, if they ever got free health care, their society would completely collapse. Like in Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Australia and New Zealand.
It’s not free. We pay for it. And we still have a two tier system with private care available.

Well, that makes all the difference!

Whew! For a second there, I thought that we were socialists..... where apparently no one pays for public programs and they just happen.

When the old fart boomers will pass away there will be no other choices for the US but to move towards more totalitarianism or more socialism. Our of the 2 the choices is easy.

But for that one important thing will need to happen. Americans will need to stop hiding their racism behind a flag.

The posters who continually decry the rise of socialism in the US have no idea what socialism is. These same posters never complain about handouts to corporations and the rich. In fact it is the existence and improvement of the safety net and health care etc that will save capitalism.. Socialism is a reaction to the excesses and inequities that grow naturally under capitalism.

The US, and North American in general is 20 years behind most countries politically. Let’s start with a female president/prime minister

Here
Is there a more accurate description/definition of socialism than of, by and for the people?

Good point Perry. It’s not defined well. I personally don’t see standard benefits such as EI, healthcare, etc as socialism. However, I was brought up in England.

Universal healthcare to some Americans is socialist.

I'll go a step further...

What America has in fact, is government of the (elected) oligarchs by the bureaucrats for the capitalists... 😮

Ever been to Denmark? The food is super expensive. Everything is super expensive. Even McDonald's employees make a decent wage of about $20/hr. Maybe this is why Americans are afraid of socialism? The taxes are higher but they argue what you get in return (social services like free health care, pension, etc) is worth it.

Roads are socialism, really.
Unless they are toll roads paid entirely through tolls they are paid by the people through taxes.

Same with police, schools, army, libraries....
Its just a matter of how far you want to go with socialist policies.
Do they include health care? Dental? Free university? Universal income?

Switzerland is the place to be; save some good coin and live with less stupidity in general and you are well taken care of; easy to travel to and from

It is not a question of what... but for whom?

Do capitalists need heath care? Dental care? University education? Reliable income?

it is defiantly not free
and given ballooning government debt, health care inflation and demographics, it should be clear our health care system is not sustainable
it seems very odd to expect Americans to accept a flawed unsustainable system

oh yeah i forgot socialists will apply a sustainable lens to everything except other peoples money
