Stroman had a good year in 2019 before he got traded.
His W/L sucked but he had a 2.96 ERA and an almost 1 to 3 BB/K ratio.
Sanchez I admit wasnt very good, but he did have a lot of injuries plus blister problems.

If I were GM I would've at the very least offered Stroman a 2 to 3 year contract when he became a FA. Instead they traded him.
Sanchez was a 50/50 case. Do you offer him a 1-year deal when he became FA?? Maybe, maybe not.
But Stroman for sure I wouldve tried to keep. At least offer him a deal.
AFAIK Jays GM didnt do that.

What is so hard to understand about all this??

Phil this is the last time I'm going to answer this or try to explain it because I can't explain much more clear then the example I gave above.

It doesn't matter what Marcus Stroman did before he was traded. The only thing that matters when your evaluating a trade is what he did after he was traded while still under contract. (which wasn't very much)

Once he become an FA, it was a clean slate. Your no longer evaluating that part of the trade. Your trading the player with his contract. So what Stroman and Sanchez are doing now, has zero to do with the trade.

The Metz could have gave Marcus Stroman 50 million a year. They could have given him 60 million a year. They could have given him 100 million a year. Pick any number you want. It was their choice to gamble their money however they want, and his choice to go elsewhere, stay, whatever. The Jays could have also offered him this money. Non of this has anything to do with trade. Zero, nada, not a thing.

So when you make a comment about how they're "quietly having good seasons" and all we got back were "prospects", as you of phrased it, your making a total fallacy in how your evaluating a trade.

If you and I are gm's of baseball teams, and we decide to trade centre fielder for centre fielder. The guy I send you has 1 year left on his contract, and the guy you send me has to years left on his contract. The first year of the trade they both make 1 million a dolllars and put of the same numbers. The second year, my guy is still under contract at 1 million a year, but your guy was an FA and resigned with you for 20 million that year, and they end up putting up the same numbers again playing the same games, who won the trade?

I can't explain it any better then this or the example I have about teams being sellers at the trade deadline.

^^^^^ right, but my point is we shouldn't have traded Stroman to begin with.

I was against that trade from day 1

My posts from 2018 and 2019:

Stroman and Sanchez I believe will turn it around under a better coaching/manager staff.
So that gives us 2 quality 1-2 starters. Then we need a 3, 4 and 5.
Borucki I agree might turn into a 4 or 5.
So basically we need 2 more quality starting pitchers
I really wanted Stro to stay

That's toa
Toa??

You never answered the question. Who wins the trade in the example I just gave you?
Not the Blue Jays if you look at it from a long-term perspective. Stroman would fit in perfectly in our current pitching staff.
Had the Jays offered him a long-term when he became FA in 2020 we would have a good #2 or # starter right now

I'm not talking about the Blue Jays trade. I'm talking about the example I have you if traded centre fielders...

Stro got into his own head, he didn't want to be in TO anymore than Kirk Giles did. Due to his size, I doubt he'll have longevity. After his ERA topping year Sancho got brittle, what good is a top pitcher constantly on the IR. I would rather get Menoah battle hardened knowing that he'll get stronger as the season progresses. To be perfectly honest, I miss Josh Donaldson more than either of those pitchers, we need someone with attitude. Speaking of attitude, who is this new catcher Adams, finally a mean catcher. If he hits better than retired mean catcher Jason Veritek, he's valuable.

Btw where is Kendall Giles playing? With Jordan Romano around, everyone's forgotten about him. Why did Romano pitch the 8th and not the 9th?

Again, you're looking at this from only a 2-year perspective. You have to always think long-term

The Jays could be preemptive and sign Vladdy before he is due. I would think the negotiations would start at $30 million a year, or wait until he is unrestricted, in which case I think he could become the first $50 million a year player. If they could sign him right now for 10 years $400 million, they should do it.

The Jays have a policy of not offering any contracts beyond 5 yrs. I wonder if they would break this policy with Vlad.

Any such policy they have, would be a soft policy so of course they willing the break the policy depending a ton of variables.

On the highway of life
I read a comment somewhere, maybe on Twitter, the Red Sox rotation has taken a nosedive since MLB announced their crackdown on "substance abuse" on baseballs. Probably just a coincidence.
