As usual, another well thought out post by Maurice.

I would not be surprised if Scotty Bowman said to Bob Gainey: "Your job is to shut down the other team's offense. Don't worry about scoring goals, we have Lafleur, Lemaire, Shutt, Cournoyer, etc. taking care of scoring goals."
BTW: I vaguely remember Cournoyer being a PP specialist in his first 2-3 years. Yes, he was a role player.

BTW2: The 1978-9 Canadiens have 10 members in the HOF if we include Rod Langway.
It wouldn't surprise me if Scotty Bowman said to Bob Gainey: "You can't score, at best you're a 3rd line player so if you want to stay in this league you need to follow Rick Mddleton/Reg Leach/etc around and stop them from scoring."

It's difficult to calculate goals prevented by a forward, so I'll go with plus/minus.

Bergeron 228
Gainey 201

Gainey at 201...that would put him in the bottom half from his Stanley Cup Montreal teammates...

Habs all over the Jets in this one through 3 periods. It's only close on the score board.

Price sure let in a stinker on the 2nd goal......

Let's see what happens in O.T.

If Montreal is able to beat either Colorado or Vegas next round by knocking out a star player in the first game somehow they could potentially meet NYI who also was 4th in their Division.

You could argue that Tavares made the difference in round 1, but I don’t think Scheifele makes such a massive difference to swing this.

Heck Price just had to be good in this series. Habs for the most part played better than the jets or ad well in each game.

That's a fair assessment but it was the Jets best offensive player. So it wasn't just some nobody.

Habs deserve full marks for the victory and sweeping the series........

Two thoughtful posts by The Oracle and Maurice.

"Montreal awaits the winner of the series between the Colorado Avalanche and Las Vegas Golden Knights, with a berth in the Stanley Cup Final on the line."

Seeing Marc Bergeron congratulate his players as they came off the ice was magnificent to see.

His love and passion for his team is obvious......His job is now safe as well.

I don't see how Ducharme is not back coaching them as well. And I wouldn't have said that before the playoffs started.

I've been saying it for awhile, the Habs are Stanley Cup bound.

Carey "the lounge lizard" Price abides.

I'm not sure if Tavares would have made enough of a difference, Montreal has captured lightening in a bottle.
We get stuck on defining a team by the "star" players they have, rather than how they're actually playing.
Leafs were outplayed and outcoached.
Montreal deserves this, they've got some really talented young players on the way up.

Trying to stay in a Happy Place
Fun NHL Playoff Facts 2021 Edition

I just saw this posted on Twitter
"The Montreal Canadiens have won more playoff series in the last 5 days than the Maple Leafs have in the last 17 years"

The math is a little off - but only with respect to the number of days. The Hab's won Game 7 on May 31st against the Leafs and swept the Jets on June 7th - so a little more than 5 days.

For those who may think I am "gloating" or "rubbing it in" I don't really care. You are likely the ones who have dumped all over the Hab's for years and pumped up the tires of the Leafs only to see a complete reversal of fortunes in this year's playoffs.

Who knows what will happen in the next series, or next season, but the hockey gods are surely smiling down on the Hab's in these playoffs.

Colorado or Vegas in the next round. MTL is going to find itself in the deep end of the pool in round three for sure. Can Carey Price be the life jacket that floats them safely to the final? It's a pretty tall order, even for the second best Habs goalie ever.

Not a fan of him, personally I would be excited to see him become the first coach to be fired right after winning the Stanley Cup
