Pretty good news. I'm guessing a concussion.

If it was 25 years ago it would have been, "He just got his bell rung. He should be good to go for Saturday."

While I could be wrong, anyone who thinks Tavares will be back for any part of this series is fooling themselves. After watching what happened, anyone in management who would let him play again within the next 10-14 days is crazy. That said, it is the Leafs we're talking about here, so anything is possible.

Even with Tavares out I think the Leafs need to move on from Thornton at least for next game.

Made a few bad turnovers yesterday... even if you were a very smart, but never a fast player like Joe there is almost always some equilibrium point where your lack of foot speed will make it hard to make plays and could make you turnover prone.

Leafs have done a decent job adding back end depth — I would play someone else next game.

It'll be a no brainer for management.

They'll just wait for clearance from the docs.

I agree with Thornton coming out of the lineup but at practice this morning he was on the 4th line with Spezza and Simmonds. Maybe we will see an angry Joe in game 2?

Foligno is the number 2 centre with Nylander and Gally.

Looks like Engvall going to play with Kerfoot and Mikheyev.

Hyman with Matthews and Marner as usual.

Andersen and Rittich practiced. Campbell was given the day off.

It's only game 1, lots of hockey left.
Matthews is showing some ferocity, I love it when his mojo is in overdrive.
Nylander showed up to play, you could feel the fire in his belly, he was engaged on every level.
Kudos to him for manning up.
Except when he panicked behind the net. Instead of taking a hit he chipped the puck over the glass. Speaking of which, I can't remember the last time a team took 3 delay of game penalties for putting the puck over the glass.

Price was lights out. Leafs had lots of good chances along with a few posts and crossbars. Campbell looked good but appeared slow getting up towards the end of the game. I read Freddie's in on Saturday. My guess is Foligno centers the second line with Engvall on his left. Galchenyuk centers the third line and Nash joins the taxi squad.

If the Habs can keep like yesterday with Price not allowing easy goal (a tendency he has...) this series will go up to 7 games.

I was more impressed with that one hard hit Nylander had than the goal he scored. Foligno tied up both defenders freeing up Nylander for the tap in. I didn’t think he was capable of throwing a big hit like that.

Now that he has shown that he can play responsibly in the defensive zone, maybe it’s time to try him at centre with Tavares out. It’ll be a big chance for him to shine even more brightly.

Headshot or blindside. Make your pick.

The NHL has done a wonderful job of fooling you and many others.

Just like boxing and MMA, they know people think hitting and fighting is an exciting part of the sport, but the minute something goes wrong, it's the players fault. Kind of like letting someone with a Ferrari drive as fast as they want, then telling them they need to be able to come to a full stop at any given time.

John Tavares is lucid but concussed. It could have been worse, he could have had a Gary Roberts type injury.

He issued a statement, but that's the last you'll hear from him for a minimum of a week. I suspect he's on Topamax already, a powerful anit-stroke medicaton, it will render him bed bound. Sidney Crosby was on it until they diagnosed his neck injury correctly.

What? You asked for a rule I said which one and you responded with some sort of half conspiracy

The NHL clearly allows hitting, but it defined what are illegal hits and which type of illegal hits will always be subject to disciplinary review.

Google NHL rule 48. In the summer of 2010 in response to some brutal hits the prior few years that caused longtime injuries to players such as David Booth and Marc Savard, rule 48 was established to disallow lateral or blindside hits where the head was one of the areas that was targeted. In 2013 there was a rule amendment that penalized all hits that target the head no matter what direction they come from.

They also established a policy that all such hits would automatically be reviewed for additional discipline injury or not.

Fighting is a 5 minute penalty. It is not subject to additional discipline.

I wouldn't get worked up over it...he's being a dick just to be difficult.

So we can assume Tavares is out for the series. It was an unfortunate hit from Perry. Not intentional.
Leafs need to get fired up and win game 2. Otherwise being down 2-0 to one of the best goalies in the league is hard to come back.

He's stuck in the '70s.
