Nylander will leave as fans continue to complain about him.

Matthews will stay if the Leafs are contenders and they pay him McDavid type money or better
Matthews is already making McDavid money...he'll be able to pick wherever he goes.

It'll be another Kwai Leonard moment for Toronto...

Matthews is getting McDavid money with a shorter term which is an advantage on the player side. No big deal if he leaves and we can use the money to sign McDavid. Just another wishful thought.

The Leafs‘ schedule is kinda weird, they had five days off before a b2b with Calgary and another 4 days off after. They caught Calgary playing something like 4 in 5 days but could only get a split. The bad news now is they play the remaining 24 games in 45 days.

Matthews definitely won that haggling session, I still don't get how he got everything and more when he didn't have the leverage.
I would really hate to see him go even for a shot at McDavid.
McDavid's a freak, but Matthews is such an interesting and fun player to watch, every aspect of his game is brilliant,
he's always reinventing himself towards a higher level of play.

Tavares contract set the bar...if I’m Matthews I want as much.

Both are truly generational talents and a lot of interesting arguments can be made as to who is better. I’d be happy to have either as a cornerstone of our team. The thing that puzzles me is that generally speaking a big market team like the Leafs should have an edge in bargaining power over a small market team like the Oilers. However we ended up giving up more grounds to Matthews than the Oilers gave McDavid. That’s why I call our G.M. the “ generous man “.

GTA & Thereabouts...
Comparing McDavid's salary to Matthews' is unfair as their were done under different salary caps, etc. The Leafs wanted Matthews and Marner in their productive windows while they had Tavares and Reilly. Nothing really matters after that. Matthews will likely head home to Arizona (if the team is still around) or nearby to Vegas or LA.

Right now, McDavid at his current contract is the best discount deal of the NHL. It breaks my heart that Tavares has been such a bust these past two seasons... But when I look at Buffalo, I feel better.

Matthews is all about winning the big one, I think that will be the main consideration for his decision.
If the Leafs are still very competitive, Leafs have every thing he needs, relationship with the club,
love of management and fans, big stage, great diverse city, etc.
If New York or Los Angeles are trending towards a shot at the Cup, it might be a problem.

Tonight’s prediction?

Another longish lay-off, a bottom ranked opponent, maybe Campbell in net.
Lots of mind games going on I’m sure.

I say a slim victory though 😬

The slimmest of margins.

The brilliant defensive play in overtime, back alone on a 3 on 1?
Of course, Auston Matthews.
Potting the game winning goal?
Noted sniper Justin Holl.

That overtime was fantastic especially the last minute @gcostanza - nice to see the buds get that one. Both goals were just bad luck for JC36. Still played well.

Matthews‘ quick reflex turned a 3 on 1 against into the winning goal. I believe it was Sens’ Chabot who made that awful pass and why Pierre Dorion was so pissed after Holl scored.

How did all refs on ice, the entire Leafs coaching staff, and the players on the bench miss that 6 Ottawa skaters for a stretch of at least 15-20 seconds ? All it took was just one shout of “too many men” and the Leafs would get a pp.

My Sens are night by night playing a little better and better.

They weren't the best team tonight and didn't deserve the win but they made it close and were very competitive.

There are brighter days ahead for them that is certain.

Having said all that what in the blazes was Chabot thinking with that pass attempt? I'm thinking exhaustion had something to do with it.

It was good to see Pierre Dorion show some emotion.

Jack Campbell should stay in the net and not play the puck, he would have another SO, but he's 5-0 this season.
Jack Campbell on his misplays with the puck tonight:

"I feel bad about those two goals.
I don't want to kill the momentum and we played so well and I know those those types of goals just can't go in."
