According to Luk Fox :

Current cap space: $60,602
Projected deadline space: $130,527

Pending free agents:
UFAs:
• Frederik Andersen, 31, $5 million
• Zach Hyman, 28, $2.25 million
• Wayne Simmonds, 32, $1.5 million
• Alex Galchenyuk, 27, $1.05 million
• Zach Bogosian, 30, $1 million
• Alexander Barabanov, 26, $925,000
• Jimmy Vesey, 27, $900,000
• Jason Spezza, 37, $700,000
• Joe Thornton, 41, $700,000
• Travis Boyd, 27, $700,000

There are also restricted free agents in Dermott and a few others, followed by Rielly’s free agency the following year.

With the above in mind any trade(s) will hinge on salary compatibility. It’ll be interesting to see if more speed /skills or more grit/toughness are to be added, but it’ll also depend on the costs of the upgrade.

I know it’s unlikely to happen knowing the love Dubas has on Nylander and a lot of you cheerleaders will disagree, Nylander’s trade value has never been higher with the way he’s been playing the last few games, and I’d be delighted if he’s traded for one of the Tkachuk brothers. That’ll make this team a lot harder to play against.

I don't think anyone would give up a Tkachuk brother for Nylander.

What would you say about Nylander, a prospect, and maybe a high draft pick for Tom Wilson of the Caps? You're giving away a bit of scoring but gaining a lot of grit. Wonder if WSH would entertain that conversation....?

No way I'd do that...Tom Wilson is not that valuable...Leafs should have kept Matt Martin.

If I was Washington I'd do that deal for sure.

And another thing about Wilson...he get's suspended a lot, big-time suspensions, no good to the team when he can't play...and as he get's older, he will change and be less effective and will be just a big slow winger.

Tom Wilson (27 in 10 days)
William Nylander (25 in 6 weeks)
Wilson, a goal every 6.9 games
Nylander, a goal every 3.4 games
Wilson, a point every 2.6 games
Nylander, a point every 1.4 games
Wilson, p.i.m./game = 1.94
Nylander, p.i.m./game = 0.24
Wilson, highest 1 season total, 22G, 44P.
Nylander, highest 1 season total, 31G, 61P (twice).

So, the Maple Leafs should trade a younger, faster, more skilled player and a high draft pick (a 1st? a 2nd?) and a prospect (Nick? Rasmus? Timmy? S.D.A.? Semyon?) for a player 2+ years older, is prone to acts that get him suspended by the NHL, plays a type of game that tends to lead to a steep decline.

This may be the 1st time I've written this on this forum: If Kyle Dubas did this, he should be immediately fired.

But, grit, grinder, amirite?

Maybe not one for one, but what if one of the Leafs’ blue chip prospects (Sandin/Robertson/Amirov) is included in the deal ?

The only thing that concerns me with Tom Wilson is the high mileage on him. He has given out a lot but has also absorbed a lot of punishments. His decline may come much too sooner. The Tkachuk brothers are younger and fresher and will compliment Matthews and Marner nicely.

These teams aren't that stupid, throwing in an AHL prospect doesn't sweeten the deal.

How about Tkachuk for Marner or Tkachuk for Tavaras...do you think Calgary or Ottawa would do that?

John Tavares wouldn't do that.
The point I'm making is why would Calgary or Ottawa trade their best player for Nylander and an AHL player.

If you want those guys you're not going to steal him, you have to give up one of your top guys...I don't think if I was Calgary or Ottawa I'd trade one of the brothers for Marner, never mind Nylander and an AHL player.

The guys I named are nhl prospects, not AHL PROSPECTS.

I wonder how many teams would trade their best player for Nylander and an AHL player...I wonder if the Leafs would trade Matthews for a 2nd line player and the AHL player of their choice...see how silly it sounds.

Right now they are AHL players except Amirov who's still in Russia...you wanna play a word game, fine...
I think you‘re underestimating Nylander’s value more so than the “haters” on this board, which I don’t believe you’re one of them. Contrary to what Shack believes, I don’t think I’m the only “Nylander haters” that feels Nylander has value in what he brings, i.e. offence which is premium in today’s NHL and what Ottawa sorely lacks.

Nylander doesn’t bring the missing elements for the Leafs to win in the playoffs. The younger Tkachuk still has to prove what he can bring in playoff hockey but it’s safe to assume that he’ll be very effective. The Senators can’t worry about the playoffs until they get in. Nylander on the other hand is a much better player in the regular season and that should help Ottawa getting closer to a playoff spot.
