So thankful that you put this in the Sports Discussion forum Chucky. Otherwise you'd have to endure the wrath of shack

He might give you the heck for starting a duplicate thread though

RIP Walter the greatest hockey Dad. On the night when Gretzky broke Gordie Howe's record, a TV interviewer asked how proud he is of Wayne, Walter said "I'm proud of all my boys". Total class.

I nearly shit my pants, I read the title without my reading glasses - I thought it said Wayne.

Walter Gretzky suffered a brain aneurysm while Wayne was still playing, he never fully recovered from it. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease early in this Century. He dealt with it for almost 20 years - tough guy! Phillis Gretzky passed away in 2005.

Never really understood why he was so famous.
He did what every other father does. Take their son to games, build a backyard rink, etc.
Walter wasn't a former hockey superstar, just a blue collar guy.
We never hear about Mario's dad, or Sydney's dad.

It's probably because he was an ordinary schmoe who had big dreams for his kids...I mean the effort he has to do to provide for his family and still be able to manage to focus on their activities...that's hard to do now...I always wonder how was life as a parent in the 80's...

It is mainly about relationships. Wayne has always been a vocal supporter of his father and Walter seemed to enjoy (not bask) in the limelight. He came across as sincere and genuine and those who knew him personally were in agreement.

Perhaps other major stars like Mario and Sid have fathers who prefer to remain low key and keep their anonymity.

Fortunately Austin Matthews mom is in the spotlight because I think she is hot in a milf kind of way.
