Honest question. Does any player that went on a strike and came back with their team was worth the contract they got?

There's been so many case like WN88... Seems like as soon as the contract ink is dry they do the same on the ice ;)
Not hockey, and not exactly the same situation, but John Elway held out against the team who drafted him. Once he got traded to Denver, I'd say that he had a decent career. Same with Lindros holding out against the Nords.

I don't know how to search it, but I imagine that there are many holdouts who ended out earning their keep in different sports..

Just before signing his latest contract. That was beginning of 2018-1019 season no?
Yes, his most recent contract was before the 2018-19 season

He did not go on strike.
He was a free agent, not under contract.
Players cannot appear in a game unless under contract.

Negotiations took longer than either side would've wanted, ideally.

Since signing the deal, his numbers are:
Games: 142
Goals: 43
Assists: 57
+/- is +30

He has scored at a 25G/Season (82 gm sched) clip since signing
He has averaged 33 A/Season/ (82 gm sched) under this deal

Players often struggle in their 1st year after being a late contract is reached.

If you remove the '18-19 season, he's averaged 33 G 34A (82gm sched) last season & 20 games into this year.

Is William Nylander a perfect hockey player?
Heavens no, far from it.

Didn‘t he get paid $10 millions the first year ?
$12,000,000
$9,000,000 last season, pro-rated
$6,000,000 for each of the next 4 years, this year's pro-rated.

I read somewhere that Willy’s average annual salary is approximately 7.5 millions for the six year term, presumably including signing bonuses.
I checked the F.A.Q.'s on capfriendly.com

The way I understand it ...

Because he signed after the season started, the cap hit for that season is spiked, the remaining years lower than would be had a player signed prior to the season.

Sooooooo, we are all correct.

He's getting $45Mm over 6 seasons, averaging $7.5Mm. (minus Covid~19 situation)
Because he didn't play a full season in Year 1 of the deal, his cap hit shrinks, to $6,962,366

I think I followed capfriendly's explanation, but if anyone else can contribute something, toss it in!

Does that mean he's a 7.5M player in essence, the cap notwithstanding?

I think it could be looked at, at either number ($7.5M vs. ~$6.962) with a legitimate case to be made.

The cap hit is important as to how a player slots in as a piece of a team's overall salary puzzle.
The player is likely more concerned with his bank balance at the end of the day.

I did a comparison of Marner's first few years with P. Kane's first few years a couple of months ago and they were very similar. This year after 20 games each they both have 9 goals 21 assists for 30 points.
When Patrick Kane was signed, his contract took 15.22% of the cap.
When Mitch Marner signed, his contract took 13.38% of the cap.
Marner is 2" taller than Kane (according to NHL.com).

For you Nylander lovers, can you not honestly admit that he plays much harder the couple games after the benching ? Can you not honestly admit that kind of effort has been missing from most of his game ?

I know effort when I see it. The previous game the execution was poor and the bounces didn’t go his way but the effort was there. Only trouble is, he’s a high maintenance guy and needs to be spanked sometimes to get the effort out of him. Good coaching Keefe!

The scrub forwards on this team are awful. Kerfoot and Vesey have no hockey IQ at all. Boyd and Barabanov have no skill. The only thing you notice about Engvall is how fucking long his neck is. I'd rather put skill guys like Petan or Galchenyuk out there with the possibility they can make some plays.

Kerfoot playing well of late. If you think Nylander is bad defensively, Galchenyuk is worst. Petan keeps getting knocked on his ass.

Matthews is playing through a wrist injury. I notice Matthews no longer teeing up for the one-timers. The coaching staff thinks Matthews can play through it. There goes the 50 goal season.
