Out of a wealth of choices, she attended the HBCU Howard University (that means Historic Black College since you probably don't know) and pledged the legacy Black sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha; where she remains a prominent spokesperson.

In other words, she is what she is - a half-black half-East Indian woman who grew up in an East Indian household in Berkley California and Montreal. She has no more experience with African American poverty or culture than Mike Pence.
