I don't know about gloves but masks are available at the corner stores or even my local fruit market has them.

You don't really need gloves, just wash your hands. I recently took a friend to a scheduled hospital appointment and they told her to keep the mask on but to take off her gloves.

Some stores in Korea Town sell masks and shields. Not sure about the quality of the masks or how you could test the quality.

Go to any Chinese mall and look for their Walmart equivalent. There will be plenty of masks and gloves in there.

The masks will probably be of poor quality...but still better than nothing.

I've seen lots on places like etse.

I got mine through a friend recommended artist.

As for gloves I'm using a pair of work gloves and sanitizing when I get home. Just wash your hands alot.

I'm just aware of people near, touch as little as possible. I have sanitizer from a distillery.

Get masks with a filter pocket. Apparently the 3M furnace filters work best with 80% blockage.

Pretty effin sad when we live in a country that made everything, from Lancaster bombers to toothpaste now we have to depend on getting this stuff from China. Shame on our politicians that let this happen. My grandfather would be rolling over in his grave knowing we have to get this from a communist country 10,000 friggin kilometers from home!

If any good comes from this mess I hope the God Da** government gets their head out of their ass & realizes Canada needs to start manufacturing some of their own products again. In a country of 30mil & change there's no reason we all shouldn't have at least two masks for everyone in the household. I bet if everyone of us were wearing a mask in public our numbers (not including LTCH's) would be close to half. Same with the US...but the majority there are just too proud/stupid to wear one! Look at all the asian countries, after the pandemic in China a 100+ years ago they never lost sight of how much a mask can help

I absolutely agree that we need to be able to repatriate our manufacturing of essential goods like masks, swabs, etc. But I would still want to be able to import goods from other countries too. It just manages the risk better. If our own national supply chain went down we could import from other countries and vice versa.

But we absolutely do not be dependent on one country to manufacture essential goods for us...especially China of all fucking places. We need to limit our dealings with them as much as possible.

Not sure about the quality of the masks or how you could test the quality.
A basic tests one can do at home to see if a mask passes the minimum quality:
For the three-layered surgical type masks:
In a relatively clean working area, carefully cut open and separate the layers/sheets of the mask

Layer 1 (outer layer) usually blue, is water droplet resistant. Hold it in a form of a cup/spoon, put like a teaspoon of water in it.
No leak = pass
Leak = fail

Layer 2 (middle layer) the important layer, is white. Look carefully at it (use magnifying glass if you like) and you shouldn't see any obvious holes/bubbles on it.
This layer should also be holding a bit of static. Static layer theoretically will hold particles onto itself instead of letting them passing thru.
No visible holes & retaining static = pass
Visible holes = fail
No static = fail

Layer 3 (inner layer, the layer that touches your face) is a bit absorbent, as in it'll absorb some moisture from your breathe.
Comfy & keeps other layers of mask from getting wet = pass

Just a test one can do at home without professional tools. It just shows if each layer is doing minimally what it is suppose to do.

edit: found a youtube video of similar tests

Apparently, Longos is handing out free masks as you enter the store. No, I don't know if the mask has a Longos logo on it.

They will also point that temperature gun at your forehead to take your temperature. My concern is that they might mistakenly pick up a real gun by mistake and end up shooting you with a real bullet in the forehead (just kidding).

Do not buy masks from Fortressmask.com. Ordered one mask two months ago and I have not received it. I saw some negative reviews today that I wish I read two months ago.The website says that they are located in Australia but it turns out they are really from China.

I saw a young woman wearing a "rainbow" stripe mask. I asked where she got the mask and she said her girlfriend made for her. I also fashioned my own mask but the stuff that goes inside is cut from a real mask from a box of masks that I got several years ago (did not see any expiry date on the box).

Precisely this. People with gloves still touch everything and if those gloves are infected then how are they doing any good since they're not washed during wear.

No need for gloves. The virus does not get through skin. It needs a mucous membrane like in your mouth, eyes, nose or airway.

In fact gloves are a bad idea as they cannot be washed or disinfected. Better to be aware of what you are touching when you are out and NOT touch your face. Use hand sanitizer aaafter you leave the grocery store etc.

As for masks.

Although the home-made and pleated surgical masks are better than nothing, they mostly protect others from your breath, sneezes, coughs. They allow a significant amount of air in around the loose fitting surgical masks and relatively permeable home-made fabric masks.

To protect yourself from ingesting airborne virus', you need an N95 or KN95 mask. Actually it is classified as respirator.

These masks are more conformal to fit your face with a good seal around the perimeter so that most, if not all, of the air you breathe in has passed through the filter media.

I personally carry a 3M N95 in a baggie and put it on before I go into a store etc. I don't wear it outdoors. I am careful to use hand sanitizer on my hands before I put it on, and before I take it off. I let it air out while i am walking and when I get home I spray both sides with hydrogen peroxide. I let it air dry and use it again and again. Have lots but am still on my first 2 masks (in rotation)

I have seen the KN95 masks and frankly, I think they should be just fine. I have seen them in a convenience store so they are around. Sure they are $5 or more but who cares if they used to cost $2. Buying $20 worth is good insurance.

(The KN95 is the Chinese nomenclature for the North American N95 mask.)
