Far from being impossible, "virus floating in the air" is the - primary - means by which the virus is spread, e.g. by people coughing, sneezing, talking, breathing it into the air, not by people touching themselves & each other with their hands.
I understand virus are readily transmitted in droplets produced by
sneezing and coughing. I had in mind virus drifting in open space.
That could be an unknown number of virus produced in a sneeze
by someone in a street spread around in my neighbourhood. I don't
want to come into close contact with someone sneezing. But I won't
worry about catching a 'naked' virus (one without the shelter of a
droplet) floating in a quiet area.

"CDC considering recommending general public wear face coverings in public":

"Should we all be wearing masks? That simple question is under review by officials in the U.S. government and has sparked a grass-roots pro-mask movement.

"... Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are considering altering the official guidance to encourage people to take measures to cover their faces amid the coronavirus pandemic, according to a federal official who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it is an ongoing matter of internal discussion and nothing has been finalized.

"CDC guidance on masks remains under development, the federal official said. The official said the new guidance would make clear that the general public should not use medical masks — including surgical and N95 masks — that are in desperately short supply and needed by health-care workers.

"Instead, the recommendation under consideration calls for using do-it-yourself cloth coverings, according to a second official who shared that thinking on a personal Facebook account. It would be a way to help “flatten the curve,” the official noted.

"Such DIY cloth masks would potentially lower the risk that the wearer, if infected, would transmit the virus to other people.

"...At the daily White House briefing Monday, President Trump was asked if everyone should wear nonmedical fabric masks. “That’s certainly something we could discuss,” Trump said, adding, “it could be something like that for a limited period of time.”

"In recent days, an assortment of scientists, health experts, pundits and influencers has vigorously advanced their position that everyone venturing into public or crowded places should wear a mask or face shield — even a homemade one — to lower the rate of transmission of covid-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

"Thomas Inglesby, director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said in an interview the CDC should urge people to use nonmedical masks or face coverings."

"“I think it would be a prudent step we can all take to reduce transmission” by people who are infected but have no symptoms, he said. DIY coverings — like the ones his children just fashioned from old clothes for his family — aren’t perfect and should not be used as an excuse to stop social distancing, he said.

"Prominent among the people pushing the idea is Scott Gottlieb, an internist and former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration in the Trump administration. Gottlieb was the lead author of a pandemic-response plan published Sunday by the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative-leaning Washington think tank, and framed as a road map for restoring the economy gradually to normal. The road map said that, during this initial phase of rapid community transmission of the coronavirus, “everyone, including people without symptoms, should be encouraged to wear nonmedical fabric face masks while in public.”

"On CBS’s “Face the Nation” on Sunday, Gottlieb was more specific: “A cotton mask — we should be putting out guidelines from the CDC on how you can develop a mask on your own.”

The authorities are not much concerned about COVID-19 viruses that are in the air for hours or in feces. Their primary focus has been on the spread of the virus by touching the face & especially the heavier stuff (droplets) through the mouth (coughing, talking, etc) of the infected. Hence the 6 feet "social distancing" rule, though i'm quite sure a sneeze could send the virus further than that.

Wearing a mask not only protects the healthy mask wearers from the infected. It also protects others from those who don't know they're infected. And how does any of us know we are not infected & infecting others without knowing it. Hence the need for everyone to wear a mask.

Yup, that's only a concern for a very small number of people who engage in brown showers.

"A federal official said Tuesday that the C.D.C.’s review of mask wearing for the public stemmed from a request by the White House coronavirus task force, which is leaning toward recommending it.

...Dr. Fauci said: “The idea of getting a much more broad communitywide use of masks outside of the health care setting is under very active discussion at the task force. The C.D.C. group is looking at that very carefully.”

...If everyone wears a mask, individuals protect one another, reducing overall community transmission. And places like Hong Kong and Taiwan that jumped to action early with social distancing and universal mask wearing have gotten their cases under much greater control.

There have been troubling reports that indicate the coronavirus may be able to travel farther in the air and stay in the environment longer than is possible by respiratory droplets, which have so far been assumed to be the primary mode of transmission of the virus.

One study in Singapore found traces of the virus in air vents in patient isolation rooms. In another study, researchers at the University of Nebraska Medical Center detected extensive contamination in patient rooms as well as in air samples collected from the hallways outside rooms.

Dr. Scott Gottlieb, the former commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration, said in an interview on Sunday that the C.D.C. should put out designs for cloth masks for the public. “The value of the mask isn’t necessarily to protect you from getting sick, although it may offer some protection,” he told CBS News. “It’s to protect you from other people. So when someone who’s infected is wearing a mask, they’re much less likely to transmit infection.”

He said studies involving the flu suggested that you could reduce your ability to spread the flu by about 50 percent if you wore a mask.

"U.S. Reviews Guidance on Masks to Fight Coronavirus as Europe Embraces Their Use

New evidence of asymptomatic transmission supports Asian practice: To make infected people wear masks, make everybody wear one

U.S. public-health authorities are reviewing recommendations for wearing face masks and a wave of European governments have ordered citizens to use them outside the home, signaling a shift among Western governments on a contentious issue in the coronavirus pandemic.

"Calls grow for Germany-wide use of face masks

Regional officials urge federal government to make usage mandatory to counter Covid-19

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/31/calls-grow-for-germany-wide-use-of-face-masks-covid-19

"After Austria ordered shoppers to cover their mouths and noses in supermarkets, increasing numbers of regional officials in neighbouring Germany are urging the federal government to introduce a similar rule. The Czech Republic and Slovakia have also just made masks mandatory.

On Tuesday, the eastern city of Jena became the first German municipality to order mask use in shops and on public transport, though authorities are encouraging people to sew their own, or wear a protective cloth, rather than seek out medical masks which are in short supply.

...Earlier this week, the head of the German association of supermarkets, Nils Busch-Petersen, appealed to shoppers to wear masks, or some form of mouth and nose protection, for the safety of workers, who he said needed to know that shoppers were making an effort to keep them safe. German supermarkets have already taken measures such as putting cashiers behind perspex windows and employing a person at the entrance to disinfect every supermarket trolley.

You want to wear a mask? Knock yourself out.
I am wearing a mask.

I hope you are not asymptotic spreading everywhere when you do errands like groceries shopping or getting gas or getting medicines for yourself or your farm animals. If your responsible staying isolated in your 200 acres not meeting people then that not a issue for me. The issue is your family doctors that giving all his patients not the most current update advice base on new data from MIT.
Your family doctor had taken a Hippocratics.

The Hippocratic Oath is a sworn agreement made by physicians when they become doctors. It includes a promise to share knowledge, to help the ill and not cause harm, and to never give a deadly drug or help another to use one.

Set an example do wear a mask a do for others and do for your neighbors, do for your country. The faster everyone wear a mask and help stop the pandemic , save the economy before we all go into a recession or God forbid a depression. Remember USA going into recession or maybe a depression the Federal or State government may be going broke and when that happens they will cut your government pension ( old age security) if they have no money. They will have to get from somewhere that been from people who have money. They will find an excuse to tax you more.

Remember there more people who have no money and you might be more will off then most people. They will find an excuse to tax your hard earned money.

Since you now know the facts from MIT show in the video, Don't you think it time to be responsible and
plus in beginning in February everyone tell you ( Mainstream, State/ Federal Gov't) tell you not to worry it only the flu.

PS. You don't shut down cities/ countries causes billions of dollars in damages per day for just a flu.

Here the video again for you rewatch it again and may help you to understand clearer if you watch to quick and missed some part.

Why should everyone wear a mask? Go to 14:45 of the video.

Fine ! Hope you" do not" kill someone and don't destroy the economy " depression" !

Three Reasons Everyone wears a Masks:

1. Stops infected people from expelling infectious particles.
2.Help you remind you not to touch your face.
3. If you infected anyway, much better chance of " starting small" low inoculum level= a much better disease outcome .
WIthout a mask you will get a large inoculum
level ( someone cough at you) billions of viral goes into your face goes into your nose, mouth and eyes. You get sick faster and lessen the chance for your body to mount a properly defence ( Hours vs Days). Too large inoculum level in your body it overwhelms your body defence.

PS. It not rocket science that how you stop a pandemic!

PPS. What part of logic you don't understand!! This are the same medical experts told everyone not to worry in February it " only the Flu" , now they shut down the whole country for the flu. IN the past history of USA did they shut down the cities/ country and the economy for the ordinary flu?.

Plus I live in the city.

It’s actually 208 acres. I also have enough food, essentials and fuel to last more than six months and the gate at the end of my laneway has been locked for weeks.

Please get professional help! You posted on a public forum you hope I kill someone!

That’s certainly not normal behaviour ( maybe also illegal). I can recommend a good doctor.

Typo error typing a a small mini iPad " Meant I hope you don't kill someone " Thanks for catching it.
Look from a logic point of way trying to practice safety and it don't make sense if I tell you to kill someone. Obviously it is a typo errors.

I will not take your medical advice of seeking professional help because of a typo. Plus you are not a qualified medical experts.

Look at all my previous post history ! ANd post history I preaching safety by encouraging everyone wear a mask! Not encouraging everyone not to wear a mask! Even created post of showing everyone on how to make your DIY mask, Here the link---> https://terb.cc/vbulletin/showthrea...e-a-N95-mask-with-a-Bra-(-DIY)-Do-it-yourself

I will fixed my typo mistakes! Thanks for pointing out for me!
PS. Your sacrasm " I can recommend a good doctor" is not funny! Again obviously you know it a typo.
Plus like you said you not taking any advice from me also.!
Your are probably more prepared then most Americans.

C.D.C. Weighs Advising Everyone to Wear a Mask

...Guidance on mask wearing is “being critically re-reviewed,” said Robert Redfield, director of the C.D.C.

...Dr. Robert Redfield, the director of the C.D.C., confirmed in an interview with WABE in Atlanta, a National Public Radio member station, on Monday that the agency was reviewing its guidelines on who should wear masks. Citing new data that shows high rates of transmission from people who are infected but show no symptoms, he said the guidance on mask wearing was “being critically re-reviewed, to see if there’s potential additional value for individuals that are infected or individuals that may be asymptomatically infected.”

The coronavirus is probably three times as infectious as the flu, Dr. Redfield said. Some people are infected and transmitting the virus probably as long as two days before showing any symptoms, he said. “This helps explain how rapidly this virus continues to spread across the country, because we have asymptomatic transmitters and we have individuals who are transmitting 48 hours before they become symptomatic,” Dr. Redfield said in the interview.

“That’s important, because now you have individuals that may not have any symptoms that can contribute to transmission, and we have learned that in fact they do contribute to transmission,” Dr. Redfield said.

...He said studies involving the flu suggested that you could reduce your ability to spread the flu by about 50 percent if you wore a mask.

O

OnTheWayOut

Amazon did have masks available today, including N95.

To me, the main reason for people to wear masks is that how can anyone be sure they aren't asymptomatic? Anyone sick is supposed to wear a mask, if you don't have symptoms you could still be spreading Covid. Leave the N95s for the medical folks unless supply is plentiful. There is no harm in wearing a mask, only harm is if you don't and are asymptomatic.

The aerosol Corvid-19 can enter the eyes as well, many people do not wear eye protection so N95 (fit tested) alone is probably not enough. If the next Corona virus is as lethal as SARS and as contagious as Corvid-19, then the future of mankind will be very uncertain.

Actually, most epidemiologists, the qualified experts in this field of medicine, were saying to prepare. It was trump who compared it to the flu, even at the beginning of March.

trump failed to heed your proper advice. Listen to the medical experts.

Does the N95 itself even give 100% protection from COVID-19 to the mouth & nose areas?

Eye protection would also appear to be important. Might sunglasses or prescription glasses help? OTOH there are medical goggles:

Also full face hockey shields & motorcycle helmets with full face shields can also protect the eyes. Some other eye protection coverings that might be considered are pictured here:
