I wonder how many SPs declare all their income. So if we replace servers with SPs by your account they never claim income, make lots of money enough to develop a terrific drug habit. And until they pay their full share of taxes you don’t have any respect for them.

Just a thought....
I’ve no respect for anyone that dodges their taxes.

It’s just not a good system. Servers get paid below minimum wage, and tips are supposed to make up the difference (or more than), so a lot of servers seem to feel like if you’re not tipping, you’re basically stealing their money. If you do a good job and deserve a tip, I’m happy to give you one, I just don’t feel like I should be subsidizing your salary.
I am all for subsidising waiters' wage UP TO the minimum wage. Assuming an average 4 new tables per waiter per hour, it should be $3 tip per table.

You assume wrong. One of the reasons I got out is it's pretty much 3 table sections now. And all it takes is one table of camping ladies to kill your night.

Add in a tip pool for bar, hostess, busser and cooks (yes they get tip pool in many places) that is 5% of SALES NO MATTER WHAT THE SERVER GETS and that doesn't come close.

Remember also no benefits package, no sick day pay, no rrsp match, minimal CPP in, minimal unemployment insurance, early cuts on slow days( as in come in, a few tables and done for the night). Late hours, drunk patrons, stress( it ranks in top five consistantly via testing below air traffic controllers and first responders ).

I'm glad I was in, glad I'm out into something alot more stable. But don't think for a minute I didn't earn every penny I did.

Anyone who thinks the solution is to raise the server's minimum wage to match the current standard minimum wage has no idea what they're talking about and have no idea how hard the job is.

It also varies from place to place. I was a restaurant manager for a few years, but it was well known restaurant that also had a bar area. I can tell you the servers and staff where I managed had much higher stress then a place like swiss chalet where majority of patrons are coming in to eat one thing, with a small menu that closes at 10PM and not having to facilitate big corporate functions.

I went to a steak restaurant in Copenhagen where you filled out a card to order. What type of steak, how you would like it cooked, sides, etc. The waiters brought the food and took drink orders but that was it. It worked and it was a nice place. :)


I also like Brazilian Rodizio style. You help yourself the salad/seafood buffet. The gauchos come around with the different meats and you just have a server for drinks.
I went to one in Canada years ago...it was called Ponderosa Steakhouse! But how can you replace the cleavage leaning over the table and the flirting? Maybe soon we'll have robot escorts too?
 
The American (includes the US and Canada) is the dumbest system of tipping. I totally reject tipping it is like the enslavement of the low wage worker to the handout by a customer. Everyone should be paid based on the law of supply and demand - worker and employer agreement not a subsidy based on the luck of who you get as a customer. Just like I have never tipped a sexworker I treat them with dignity and respect and are making already say $250/hr or a share they agree upon via an agency.

In much of Asia tipping is considered an insult.

I returned in June from Frankfurt Germany (and did FKK etc reports here). In Europe, people are paid a decent wage and not rely on tip enslavement, although usually, the customer rounds up their bill to the nearest Euro as I always did...

100% agree. I think what’s been bugging me the most is the preset buttons on the handheld machine where the first button is 20% gratuity. That’s pretentious as shit. I’m sure most restaurants that do this hope people gloss over it. Whenever I see a set up like that I change it to 2%.

Wait staff walk the food to the table. I’m not giving anyone 20% to do that.

I drive a 2007 Jetta and I work hard outside. Anyone that says I should give them 20% of what my meal costs to walk it from the kitchen to my table is the entitled one.

I tipped a waitress $10 just to bring out fish n chips to my table yesterday. I would have felt guilty without tipping. This sick ritual needs to end. It's socially engineered pressure on the patrons of restaurants across this great country. It's getting something for nothing and that's deplorable.

No it's not. You know why??? Because society and government has created this mess. Most restaurants don't make it past the 5 year mark. It's a industry rife with hard working owners going bankrupt despite only having to pay their wait staff below minium wages. We want all these nice restaurants in Toronto, but we don't want to pay when we eat at them. You have ignorant people like JackBurton who thinks "all they do is bring food to his table" with no fucking clue how stressful the job is. I've been a manager is 3 different industries in my career, and I can tell you my staff in the restaurant industry easily had the most stress. Same with myself as a manager. I could not believe the pay I was receiving for what I was doing in contrast to other management positions I had in other industries.

So now we've set up a system where servers are allowed to get paid less then minimum wage on the basis that customers will tip them. The problem is, less and less people are tipping them (like you). So who's taking the hit??? The fucking poor servers.

So, I’m aware that being a server is a tough job, I don’t debate that. The question is, if the rest of the world can do without tipping, why is it so necessary here? I always hear people saying “well, if we paid servers a livable wage, we’d have to raise our prices”, but that doesn’t seem to be the case in countries where tipping doesn’t exist. They’ve all seemed to figure out a system where restaurants can charge reasonable prices, stay in business, pay servers livable wages, and not have to rely on tipping, so why is tipping apparently the only way the industry will work here?

I spent most of June in several European countries, and it is amazing how much more convenient life is without the silly rituals we cling to in Canada.

1. When you buy something from a store, the price on the item is what you actually pay.

2. In a restaurant, the price of the food items is what you actually pay, although you normally round up a bit.
