Friend calls me up and says his friend wants to sell her car cheap.Would I like to buy it. I don't really want or need it but find it hard to turn down a cheap car. He tells me she just lost her job and can't afford to insure it, let alone drive it. Wants to get it out of the underground parking lot because the manager doesn't want it sitting there without insurance.
He calls me back next day and says he thinks he might be able to get her a better offer, than the one we discussed. I said. Go for it. Don't let me stand in her way. I don't really need it.
Calls me back next day and says that deal is off. Why don't I come and see it? I say. Why doesn't she just sell it on Craigslist? He says, you don't understand. She isn't going to do that. A lot of people just aren't going to bother doing that.
So I look at the car and without a mechanic checking it out, suggest a price, seeing as she wants to get rid of it. He says, considering her circumstances, no job, no car, it would be nice if I offered her more, just to help her out. I agreed.
We make an arrangement to do the sale and paperwork when she gets home. He calls me and says she will be home shortly after work...huh?
She comes home. from work. and says, I will follow you guys up to the insurance office in my car...I think wtf?
So while he is driving me up to the office, I say, "I thought you said she lost her job" he says, oh, that was her second job. she still has her first job.
I say, I thought you said she was so broke she had to sell her car.Now she is following us in a new car. WTF? he says. So. she only has about $4.00 in her bank account.
I say. That is my problem because?....
So I went through with the deal, because it would have been too awkward. I have this feelling stuck in my craw, that I got scammed. He senses that I guess, because he phoned back and said he was just trying to be a nice guy and help us both out.

Only way to know if you got scammed is knowing what you bought and what you paid...

Please give us more details about the car and price you paid for it. How long have you known your friend?

I can't say if you got scammed or not, but with the shifting stories, I probably would have bailed before the sale went through.

I would have,but..long story.
My point is, the car is an innocent party in this. I said to him. "I thought you said she just lost her job.meaning she has no job" he said, "no, she lost her second job" I said. "you didn't say that"
Then when she said "I will follow you in my car" I said. "I thought you said she wanted to sell the car because she could't afford to insure it, let alone drive it.now I find she has two cars"
He said. "No. It's just that she has to get it out of here because the manager doesn't want it sitting in underground parking with no insurance on it"
I said. "you didn't say that"
to me that is lying by omission. Nothing to do with the end justifying the means or whether I got a good deal or not. I paid way more than I had intended, because he was pleading her case as being impoverished and unemployed.

Yeah, all the storytelling was scammery, plain and simple but some people can't open their mouths without a story. An example widely known for it since the '70s now sits in the White House.

But you only got 'scammed' i.e. cheated, if the stories persuaded you to pay too much for a clunker not remotely worth that amount.

You tried to be the nice guy but you got scammed-you better hope that you didn’t buy a lemon.
Never buy a used car without having your mechanic look at it.
It could need thousands in repairs.

If you feel you got a good deal on the car and it is not a lemon, then you got a good deal.

Her situation sounds like one where she bought a new car and decided to sell the old one on her own because the dealer was giving her a shitty deal via the trade-in route. Per the parking, she probably only has one spot and needs to sell her old car asap so she can park her new car in that spot.

Summary - She wanted to get more for her old car than what she would have got from the dealer. Your buddy wanted to do her a solid and score some points with her.

Tell your buddy he owes you a dinner and drinks for getting him laid.

A hotel near you
We need to know how much you paid —- they may have lied about why she was selling, but I wouldn’t consider it a scam.

I mean, I’m sure you didn’t buy it just because you felt bad for her Situation. You bought it because you thought it was a good deal. Unless there’s something wrong with the car, then I wouldn’t be too worried.

You didnt get scammed. YOU GOT FUCKED!!!

Tell your buddy to NEVER call you again! He helped fuck you out of money! Good friend, huh?

The best thing to do now is sell the car for more than you paid for it and tell them how much more you made off of it just to rub it in and make them feel stupid!

NEVER buy a car under pressure!!

On a side note, I have a car im dying to unload on some poor sap if you know of anybody......????

Congratulations, you figured it out after the fact. They took you for a ride and pawned off a heap on you. They took advantage of you and are having a celebratory dinner on you and laughing at you.

BTW- Never let a mark know that he has been taken.

He says, considering her circumstances, no job, no car, it would be nice if I offered her more, just to help her out. I agreed.
They pulled the old bait and switch on you. First offer the car at a low price and then up the price by telling you she has no money.

#1 .... She lost her job
#2 .... She can't afford insurance so she has to sell the car
#3 .... The apartment manager wanted an uninsured car out of the garage . How did he know that it wasn't insured ?????
#4 .... She has another car when she can't afford the one that she wants to sell .
#5 .... You bought a car that you really didn't need .

#6 ....You got fucked over. That guy is not your buddy . Even if you sold it for more than what you paid for it you still have to go through the trouble of selling it. You found out she and he were lying before you bought the car and you still went through the deal . Like they say a fool easily parts with his money . Sorry to say.

This is where you made your mistake. When it comes to business dealings, never do the nice thing "just because" unless you have already established a level of trust.

Did you get scammed? Hard to say. She may very well be broke. Any ass can get financing for a new car these days. My neighbor just got a reverse mortgage so that he could make monthly payments that equal about 50% of his monthly income on a new car. Someone down the street on disability just got a 2018 Honda. I'd be surprised if the homeless on Yonge Street didn't drive home at night in new cars after a day of panhandling, it's that easy to get a new car.

respectfully, there is a lot of speculation taking place while we are still working with incomplete data. for all we know the op purchased a vehicle that has an $8000 book value for $2500. without the numerical information posters are just expressing their opinions from the outside looking in. so how about it op? can you reveal the price, make, model and kms relating to the purchase so we know who owes who dinner and drinks?
Small amount of dollars. Not the point. It's the principle. He selectively hid large parts of his story from me .
If say, you talk your country into invading Iraq, because you are selling your story that they have weapons of mass destruction, and you know it's not true, even if the invaded population greets you with flowers and lasting peace, the premise was based on false information. So it is just lucky that it turned out all right. However, if you know facts that you should have shared, and you didn't, you are exposing unsuspecting people to risk, which they probably wouldn't have been so willing to take, had they been told the truth. Only fair to tell the truth, so you can base your decision based on the truth.
The end still doesn't justify the means.
Thanks all for your input.
