So what will happen with him? He signs a one year deal somewhere and hopes he can parlay that into a big contract?
BBL don't imagine that was his original plan but that is pretty much his only option. He should find someone willing to give him a shot as he was an MVP but I would be surprised if he got the long term multi-million dollar contract he had expected. By the same token the Jays won't get a high draft pick if he signs elsewhere as they have to make him a qualifying offer and it is above what he currently makes. He would most certainly take the offer as I doubt he will be offered anything close to it.
Got investigating the MLB qualifying offer and I erred in what I wrote: The amount of Qualifying Offer is the mean salary of the leagues 125 highest paid players. That was 17.2 million last year and jumps to 17.4 million this year. Donaldson is current earning substantially more than that, but I would think if he were offered 17.4 he would sign. To me that would be a huge gamble based on games played and the performance level during 2017 and 2018 seasons. He had some moments in 2017 but this year was a disaster.BBL don't imagine that was his original plan but that is pretty much his only option. So JD walks for free?Unless something disastrous happens, the Jays are not calling Jr up until September if then. They want him to get as much playing time at 3B as possible. He will be their starting 3B in 2019, others need not apply.
Btw he was born in Montreal on 16th of March 1999. All he has to do is request a Canadian passport.
I would take that gamble. He's only be 33 next year and if can be anything close to his former self, it's a good price. The issue is weather or not the Jays think they can compete. If they think they're going to suck again next year, no point in offering JD 17.4 million.Got investigating the MLB qualifying offer and I erred in what I wrote: The amount of Qualifying Offer is the mean salary of the leagues 125 highest paid players. Just throwing this out there:
2019- JD at 1st base, a healthy Devon Travis at 2nd, a healthy Tulo and short, Vlad Jr at 3rd, Danny Jansen behind the plate.
A healthy Aron Sanchez, and suddenly not such a bad team. They have to get more front line pitching and outfielders.
I know that's a stretch, but not impossible.
If only the Yankees and Red Sox weren't in our division...lol.
Too bad they are stuck with Morales next year at 12 mill. Donaldson at that rate would be better.
Tulo is aging and hasn't played well since coming here in 2015. Devon isn't showing the promise of his rookie season. And Josh - who knows? Who knows if they will even make him an offer. Probably not, as they could then turn around and compete for his services around the $10 million mark. And all of Josh's 2015 stablemates are long gone. Gibby is probably gone at the end of the year as well.
I would like to see some more development of Gurriel, Hernandez and Grichuk That's probably the way of the future.
He's having a decent journeyman season by current standards. Batting just above .200, but with power and production. Not sure he will ever be a star again. But I'm glad he's still in the Bigs and having a decent year. Our forer hero JB had a career night with 7 rbi's.
If I were the Jays management I would eat Morales's contract and designate him for assignment (if that's possible) and keep Donaldson. He can still contribute, would make a good DH with rotation to 3b when needed. But with the Ruthian numbers Jr is producing now in Buffalo, his place on the Jays is set.Too bad they are stuck with Morales next year at 12 mill. Donaldson at that rate would be better.
I think JD has a lot left in him. Last year or two notwithstanding, he has been extremely durable. Everybody not named Ripken or Gehrig eventually gets hurt but it does not mean that once you do get hurt it is going to be never ending. Not everyone is a Tulowitzki. They will be a younger team and he would be an excellent role model for the whole team and especially a mentor for whoever is at 3B next year.:eyebrows: It may make him an even better player. Not sure I agree with you. Once that injury bug hits the way it has hit him, it can be difficult to shake. Now if he comes back shortly and hits consistently he may well be worth making him a realistic offer. They may look at him as a DH 1B and 3B. That in my opinion would be one year with options and let the market settle the number of millions per year. I still don't see him as a leader, and think if you want a leader Granderson is a better example as is Morales for the Latino players. What this management team will come up with is anybody's guess. Will cheapeero also look at it that way? Doubt it.
Russell Martin has 11 hits in August, his B.A. is .344 with an O.B.P. of .488, SLG .563, O.P.S. of 1.051Jansen with another RBI single yesterday. Too lazy to google but I wouldnt be surprised if he has more hits in 3 games then Martin does all month (no disrespect to our fellow canuck).
