If you have an Android phone, you have some control over this. At least I do on Orea - don't know about earlier versions.
Go to Settings/Notifications/Advanced/Emergency Alerts
You can turn alerts on/off by category, i.e. Amber, Severe Weather, etc, as well as muting the spoken alerts.

I’m at home, And on my wifi and I got the 2 alerts and the cancellation today.
Just like I still get phone calls through cellular when I’m on wifi. You don’t have to have a data plan to use cellular.
The problem is today's missing children Amber Alert was being transmitted as a Presidential Alert, which in my phone is grayed out and can't be disabled. If they actually transmit the alerts at the four different levels, like in the US, that would be sensible. Presidential Alerts should be reserved for inbound ballistic missiles and such...

When your phone is connected to Wi-Fi, it still stays connected to the cellular network.
They are literally issued daily
And most are utter waste of everyones time since even if you do care chances are the missing kid is "taken" by a parent anyways and nowhere close to you
Ontario had over *14,000* missing kids last year
If you do not see all the alerts on highways etc you must be driving with eyes closed

Does everyone with LTE in Ontario get the alert? Including phones in Ontario with non-Ontario phone numbers? What about Ontario phones that aren’t in Ontario?Now how would the general public know that? If you search Google Maps Gorham Township, nothing comes up. Try Gorham ON and it shows a location north of Thunder Bay but 28 kms from Copenhagen Road in Shuniah ON and nowhere near Copenhagen Road in Mississauga.
If they want to get this right, could it hurt to be more specific regarding the location. It should also be regional. What are the people of Toronto to do about an Amber Alert 1,400 kms away?
Basically, if you're in Toronto, keep your eyes peeled for silver car with a loud exhaust near Thunder Bay.
The reason I ask is that Ontario is a big place (obviously - as gameboy pointed out), and it’s arbitrary to send out alerts “Ontario-wide” except in the most extreme circumstances. Thunder Bay is 14 hours away on a good day, yet we won’t get alerts from Montreal (5 hours) or Buffalo (2 hours)?
Lots of countries have great alerting systems. Generally, if I’m in a country that gets a tsunami, earthquake or typhoon warning, I’m in a part of that country that is at high-risk of encountering that event. I was told the alerts are sent based on the cell tower(s) your phone is connected to. I’m surprised we don’t have the ability to control this, as it’s been a thing for as long as I’ve had smart phones.
If we get every alert about Eastern and Northern Ontario, and they get every GTA alert, how long until we start ignoring them?
I personally don't understand why we got the amber alert. The OPP had control over where they sent the alert. To send out an Ontario wide amber alert of a kid taken by mom in a domenstic dispute, in Thunderbay, seems way overboard to me.
Because it’s a new system they’re still working out some of the bugs. Eg: it IS possible to localize the alerts geographically by cell tower groupings but this would have to be developed and implemented. Also there should be different levels of alert, so that eg: an Amber Alert could go out without the audible alarm whereas eg: an evacuation alert would have the highest level of alarm.
It is already possible to localize. The OPP decided it should be province wide for this alert so I think some training is required but the tech is already there .

The screen is all well and good, but I was in a meeting yesterday and TWICE the damn thing went into alarm mode. That's nuts.

Not sure if it has to do with the Samsung model I have was never available in North America.
Make sure your hobby phone is on silent mood at all time when in the present of a SO as that could be hard to explain.

Yeah, must be teething problems using the new system.
Note: I have an iPhone which I sometimes put into "do not disturb" mode when I want to get a couple hours sleep. These alerts will bypass the "Do no disturb" mode, at least with an iPhone. I have first-hand experience with this, being woken up at 3:00 am on vacation in Hawaii (flash flood alert).
Get LT56 on the case. He is the voice for all people disturbed by phones at 3am. LOL
Honestly I think the idea of the system is good. I think having it override your phone for shit like an actual flash floods or other weather warnings, terrorist acttacks but Amber Alerts, that were not boardcast on TV from my understanding( is a little over the top. I am happy the child is safe of course, but I think people need to understand where we can actually help and were we can not.
Disagree, sending the signal all across Ontario for an incident in Thunder Bay is ridiculous. All they accomplished is to train people to ignore future alerts.
My non-Ontario cell (with a Western Canada area code) received the latest alert (I was in Toronto at the time).
