I don’t see any option to disable them on my phone.
Not sure about phones as mine was turned off.

The messages on my TV had an "exit" button. I hit "exit" on my TV remote. No change. Then I hit "exit" on my Rogers remote. Again nothing. Maybe I should have touched the exit button in the message displayed on my TV.

While the situation was tragic it was annoying to have the messages repeated again and again and again. Why tell me a hundred times that the Alert is cancelled?

The first one, I got on my watch so it didn't alarm. I don't know if my ringer on my phone was off.

The second on, I was in bed just falling asleep, it scared the shit out of me. And when it happened I was pissed. I was being woken up because she was found.

It was not until this morning I saw she passed away at the hands of her father. I cried and still feel like a shithead.

And as I type this two more amber alerts for the same thing just now on my phone and watch. I just turned my phone on.
You've got a good soul Jessica. I'm sure getting woken up is an inconvenience but when I see these alerts I'm just thankful it's not me or anyone close to me that's in distress, and I hope that the matter ends well. This mornings result was just a fucking tragedy!

I was a Jerk last night, and feel like shit now.

Police received 911 calls about timing of Amber Alert

The Amber Alert for Riya Rajkumar was sent out to mobile devices through Canada’s new mobile emergency alert system.

In a message posted to Twitter on Friday morning, Peel Regional Police said that they received numerous 911 calls complaining about the timing of the alert.

Peel police, however, pointed out that they were able to locate the suspect “as a direct result of someone receiving the alert,” proving that “the system works.”

Speaking with CP24 on Friday morning, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said that anyone complaining about being awoken by an Amber Alert “is being a jerk.”

“If there was even a remote chance that a late night text would provide a clue that would have saved an 11-year-olds life then thank goodness we have the Amber Alert system and anyone complaining frankly is being a jerk,” he said. “Imagine this was a member of your family. Imagine this 11-year-old was your niece or your daughter.”

Brown wasn’t the only one to speak out about complaints regarding the Amber Alert on Friday morning.

Jennifer Neville-Lake, whose three children and father were killed in a drunk driving crash in Vaughan in 2015, took to Twitter to express her dismay.

“I remember very well that sick feeling of dread when my kids were late getting dropped off and I couldn’t get a hold of my parents to find out why. The fear and crying. The screaming. I would have woken up everyone to find them,” she said.

Don't beat yourself up over it bro - I was pissed last night too. I almost had a panic attack. Running around the house trying to figure out what the hell is happening. First time my phone ever received an amber alert before, you can understand I'm sure!

I'm glad they found this animal (who kills their own daughter?) but they really do have to work out the kinks. Apparently the poor girl was already murdered by the time they sent out the amber alert. I wish they would have said "so and so killed his daughter and is on the run". At least that would have been honest.

This is what they release so far...
That alert was issued at around 11:30 p.m., but within an hour, Riya Rajkumar had been found dead in a basement apartment at a residence in the Queen Street and Highway 410 area of Brampton, where the suspect resided.
Hansen Rd is where body was
A bit off with Queen + 410 no?

Roopesh Rajkumar was arrested in a high-risk takedown a short time later, after a motorist saw his vehicle on Highway 11 near Orillia and called 911.
High risk LMAO
Man these cops say everything is high risk to justify their screw ups these days dont they

It was a routine traffic stop up in Oro (not Orillia)
Dude was unarmed

I heard on CP24 a bit earlier that a glitch in the system meant some people got repetitive messages for multiple hours. I was concerned that the cancellation message would still be there when I turned the TV on this morning.
There is a National Post story this morning some people STILL getting alerts as late as 8AM

But hey the police say "the system works" lol and we all blindly believe them right

I must be a real freak. Even though I am 4 hours away I got the alerts and did not mind a bit. If it was someone I knew I would want that alert to go out no matter if 3am, so this was no biggie. I did turn my volume down when I went to bed but heard the vibrate and got up to check, was relived to see she was found.

Then I got up and a few hours later heard she was killed and felt sick as hell. How can any father do this? Police are saying the alerts did help find the father so they served their purpose. Fuck, if it was your kids wouldn't you want alerts to go out? Shake your heads folks, I heard the crap about people complaining they were hours away. Well, if he was fleeing then he might be headed your way.

Man, people want to bitch about everything these days. A little girl lost her life and you want to cry about a few minutes sleep? Sometimes I find it hard to admit I am from the same human race as people.

I have my phone set to "Do Not Disturb" between the hours of 10pm and 7am. Either that silenced it or I sleep like the dead! I did read the notification in the morning. Sad to hear that it didn't turn out the right way.
I suggest you all schedule your phone to do the same during your regular sleeping hours if you don't want to be woken up by these alerts. You're unlikely to be able to help if you're sleeping after all. The only danger is special weather alerts also won't get to you.

While I understand the importance of amber alerts, you should be able to opt out. Them not giving that option was obviously going to annoy a lot of people. They can try guilting those people if they want, but those people's arguments aren't completely without merit.

Actually it is so much fun, you should see some of the gomers trying to defend the police actions
Most of their posts are so wrong it is actually funny (eg even now, hundreds of posts saying things like "assholes complain about amber, at least girl is home safe" I message them back like "uh girl is dead you realize" and they go ballistic)

This is common sense

If you are out and about on the town then MAYBE you could see the person and help out

Random carpet bombing of everyones cell phones is just stupid (there are reports of people as far away as Manitoba and Quebec receiving an alert; why if perp is travelling northbound on 400?)

Update: the Alert was issued AFTER police had already found the girl (body recovered at 11PM, alert issued closer to midnight)
No comment yet on WHY alert was issued so late (esp since all accounts had mother reporting issue + threats as early as 7PM)

Also its kinda funny how the government REFUSES to let us opt out of these spam alerts

Since April 2018, the CRTC has required that all wireless service providers participate in the National Public Alerting System (NPAS) and distribute wireless public emergency messages warning of imminent safety threats such as tornadoes, floods, Amber Alerts or terrorist threats.

Telecom companies wanted an opt-out option or the ability to disable the alarm for some types of alerts, but that was rejected by the broadcasting and telecommunications regulator.

Hey TeeJay, if you happen to stop by your local police or fire station, they can give you a special colouring book that tells you what 911 is for. It's not a public complaint line, it's for emergency calls. And you can keep the crayons.

I think people's initial reaction show their true character. I was awoken and never had any feelings of anger. I'm sure it was sent out for a reason, I fell back asleep and was awoken again, and again no feelings of anger.

I think many people, including yourself have feelings of self importance, like they are too important to be bothered.

SPs get calls and texts all throughout the night sometimes. It's common sense that if you don't want to be awoken, you either turn off your phone or put it on vibrate and leave it another room.

I feel so bad for this little girl. I was celebrating my birthday too and this makes me so sad. :(

I thought there was no one I could despise as much as chair throwing girl, then these whiners calling 911 to complain about the amber alert came along.
