Perhaps the manager was racist, it’s irrelevant if they were asked to leave because they were not customers and they refused. It’s actions, not intent or real/imaginary bias that matters.

Please enlighten us.

Please tell me how you would have handled it...properly?

After the police asked the two to leave, three times, they should have just let it go and left themselves? Should they have told the manager to just let them sit there? Should they not have responded to the call at all?
1) They should have told the men that they have the choice to stay by buying something or leave. They were not causing a ruckus nor were they doing what many other non-customers were doing.

2) If the men decide not to buy anything, usher them out the door and call it a day. The cops should not have arrested the men nor should they have detained the men for 8 hours.

They were asked to purchase or leave, and were they causing a ruckus? I don't think we know.

If you attempted to escort them out, you wouldn't be able to touch them as they would claim its assault. If the cops asked them multiple times and they didn't leave, do you think they would leave for the manager?

In my opinion, they refused to purchase, therefore they were in the wrong. Even if it was a factor, racism would be impossible to prove.

Starbucks closing and doing 'training' is a cheap form of damage control.

This misses the point. Countless white customers loiter at Starbucks every day and they don't get arrested. The issue is that these men were treated differently than white men would have been in the same situation. We call that racism and its wrong...regardless of what might have been.
Not sure which Starbucks you go to. At the ones I frequent all the loiterers have a drink or more. Also through the years I have been in many establishments and witnessed white guys being denied use of a bathroom if they did not make a purchase. Or asked to leave if loitering.

If it went down as you said it did, I agree.

And quite frankly, everything the mainstream media reports about an incident like this is highly suspect. We know they're in the business of drama for money rather than journalistic integrity.

In the end, whether this actually was racially motivated is unknown - we'll never know the exact thoughts of the manager. BUT, the optics scream racism and that's what the two guys and any journalist will claim. Manager is white, two guys are black. Were they causing any disturbance? No. Does the manager frequently ask other non-buyers to leave? Unknown

If these guys were waiting for a real estate deal, they were probably more dressed up than dressed down. So this manager trying to make a point with these two was so unnecessary. Pick your battles better.

What I don't get is why these guys- who were there to discuss real estate- did not buy a $2 beverage after they were told restrooms were for customers only. Problem solved, no debate, no cops. Free refills if you are a gold card member.
Exactly

Buy a 2 dollar cookie for crying out loud.

End of problem.

All establishments have a policy on loitering. Buy a fuckin' drink and sit your ass down. The place isn't there for you to "hang out". People of all colour/backgrounds have been asked to leave establishments for loitering.
Yep.

Including yours truly. Especially when I was younger.

When I go into a business that serves the public, I buy something. That's the deal. Business owners are there to run a business and make money to cover their costs. They are not a public toilet, they are not a charitable organization, they are not a government entity.

The vast majority of people seem to think that places like Starbucks or the like have tons of money and " what's the big deal?" They say that because they don't understand how hard it is to run a business and balance the books. If they had to, they might understand.

Title should read: "Arrested while being black in Starbucks"

There's not one lick of evidence that they were being arrested for being black. In fact, there's a legitimate reason for their arrest.

The sad part is that Starbucks is caving to the fabricated outrage...like most companies do these days.

Looks like it is racially motivated.. In this case the manager might have thought these two guys are just hanging out and waiting for more guys to join them.Look at the video the two guys are talking to the cops without freaking out, they would not have caused any disturbance for the manager to call the police unless that idiot felt threatened every time someone raised their voice

What you guys don't seem to grasp is it's not just about racism. It's about discriminatory practices.

Starbucks hasn't released any official policy to my knowledge and other customers have said they have done the same with no issues. Not a good look.

Bloor and Sleazy
On Thursday I went to a bar to watch the hockey game with friends. I got there early and sat at the bar. The bartender asked if I wanted a drink and I responded that I was waiting for the rest of my party to arrive. He said I should let him know if I wanted anything. I used the washroom while waiting. Later my friends came and we had drinks and dinner. The Leafs were very disappointing.

Apart for the Leafs blowing their playoff chances, nothing else went wrong in that transaction. And the concept of waiting to order till your friends arrive is pretty standard.

The Manager at Starbucks withheld a basic courtesy that is extended to other customers all the time. He did it because the customer was black. Again, how much more racist does it have to be for the red necks to admit it was wrong?

Then the cops were racist too. Before the men were arrested, they did agree to leave...but the cops arrested them instead. That was wrong...OBVIOUSLY!

Uh, did I miss something in the video or the article?

'He did it because the customer was black' and 'how much more racist' and 'the cops were racist too'?

I saw no proof of any of that in the video or article.
