There are some song lyrics that really make you think. For me the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald has the words:

"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours"

which is profound for me. Anyone else have any such lyric?

Easily my favorite lyric. It was the very first thing I ever heard from his baritone voice.

"I don't believe in an interventionist god."

Always liked this one by U2, though they have many examples, and I have many other sources as well.

I love you 'cause I need to
Not because I need you

It's gotta be Dylan for me:

A question in your nerves is lit
Yet you know there is no answer fit
To satisfy, ensure you not to quit
To keep it in your mind and not forget
That it is not he or she or them or it
That you belong to

John Prine "There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes"

Steely Dan " And while he sighed his body died in fifteen ways"

Ruth B - Golden

The fire used to burn, all the words used to hurt
But you are not like us, you are different
I couldn't see that that was a compliment
Cause the last thing I want now is to be you

Dylan, Indeed...

[SIZE=+2]"And what did you hear, my blue-eyed son?
And what did you hear, my darling young one?
I heard the sound of a thunder, it roared out a warning
Heard the roar of a wave that could drown the whole world
Heard one hundred drummers whose hands were a-blazing
Heard ten thousand whispering and nobody listening
Heard one person starve, I heard many people laughing
Heard the song of a poet who died in the gutter
Heard the sound of a clown who cried in the alley
And it’s a hard, and it’s a hard, it’s a hard, it’s a hard
And it’s a hard rain’s a-going to fall"

When this song came out, Corey Glover was on top of the world. He had a substantial role in Oliver Stone's Platoon and his band got rave reviews. It didn't happen - pity.

Once in a Lifetime
Talking Heads.

A life un-examined, and the realization that all those steps brought you HERE.

Lyrics

And you may find yourself**
Living in a shotgun shack
And you may find yourself**
In another part of the world
And you may find yourself**
Behind the wheel of a large automobile
And you may find yourself in a beautiful house
With a beautiful wife
And you may ask yourself, well
How did I get here?

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

And you may ask yourself
How do I work this?
And you may ask yourself
Where is that large automobile?
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful house!
And you may tell yourself
This is not my beautiful wife!

Letting the days go by, let the water hold me down
Letting the days go by, water flowing underground
Into the blue again after the money's gone
Once in a lifetime, water flowing underground

Water dissolving and water removing
There is water at the bottom of the ocean
Under the water, carry the water
Remove the water at the bottom of the ocean

Same as it ever was
Same as it ever was

I just wanna fuck you
No touching and rubbing girl
You've got a husband who loves you
Don't need your hole in my eye
I just wanna fuck you
We can't be kissing and hugging girl
You've got a husband who loves you
You need to give him your quality time

Im kinda bored tonight - thought I'd share this punk "classic" by the Electric Chairs. Words censored for you sensitive types.

If you don't wanna f*** me baby,
Baby, f*** off.

I ain't got time
For yesterday's news
Don't shoot me up or down
Bullshit news
If you don't wanna piece of the action
Baby, take a walk.
I don't like it when
You're playin' with my knees
You ain't nothing but a p**** tease

You think that you're
Hot s***, I heard
You ain't nothin' but a
Cold t***

If you don't wanna f*** me baby,
Baby, f*** off.

One, two, three, four!...
In other words, if you ain't got time to take a walk with me on my meat rack, then you can just get the hell out of my bread line.

Half-wracked prejudice leaped forth
"Rip down all hate, " I screamed
Lies that life is black and white
Spoke from my skull. I dreamed
Romantic facts of musketeers
Foundationed deep, somehow.
Ah, but I was so much older then,
I'm younger than that now.

Most of Leonard Cohen's songs are lyrical masterpieces. Take this Waltz probably takes the cake.
