VISA and other card companies have pretty good algorithms which detect unusual activity. You can no longer pay at the pump with a credit card unless you have the PIN, so in this case - they must have purchased something in the store and tapped. There might be video but nobody is going to investigate for a theft less than $100. VISA will usually reverse the unauthorized purchases (assuming you alerted them to the loss asap) and cancel the cards and chalk it up to the cost of business.
You can tap at some pumps as well, I just did it tonight. No PIN needed.

I don't have tap activated on my cards. It might be faster than entering your pin every time but if I was to lose it, without the pin the finder couldn't use it.

Cops were chasing some kids who were rifling cars. They ran thru my backyard and dropped their bag of loot behind my shed. I found it while cutting the grass before they returned. Inside were 3GPSs, bunch of change and various other thing including owners manual for a car (WTF who steals that?) and a bunch of condoms. I kept the condoms (flavoured and colourful, thought they'd be fun) but turned the rest into the cop shop. Never heard what happened to everything.

I felt bad for you until i read that part...

BTW lost my wallet once, guy found it and gave it back to me. Everything still there, including cash, probably close to 500$. tried to give him some cash, wouldn't even take it.
Most people are scum, i ran into a rare person that day.
This reminds me of a story. A fellow moved from a neighboring town and was having a pint at the local bar in his new town. Then a local asked him about the people in the town he left, and the guy said he was happy to leave, because the people were rude, and not even a little bit helpful. They were always happy to take, but they never gave unless there was something in it for them. And the local guy said he was sad to say this guy will soon find that the people in this town were mostly the same as the people he left.

Then the next day the same local guy met another fellow who moved from the same neighboring town, and he asked the same question- tell me about the people you left behind. The new guy said he was sorry to leave, because people were polite, thoughtful, and happy to assist. Then the local guy was happy to report that the new guy will soon discover that people in this town were mostly the same.

'nuff said.

Two things I'm always afraid of losing, my wallet and my phone!!
Why?
Phone - everything from contacts to pictures is in the cloud these days, and it is simple to remote wipe and lock the device
Wallet - if you lose a credit/debit card you have not lost anything (only thing I would be sad to lose is my old red/white health card) I never carry cash because it is unneeded (even back in high school I used plastic, it baffles me people who do not)

Huh??? When did that start??

I still carry my white and red SIN card
I have a red & white health card & a sin card
Dam I am old now

*edit - not only does a new applicant not get a sin card, if you lose your sin card (or old health card) it is gone for good and they will not replace it

That may have been delivered wrong. I was hypothetically speaking because I would've been thrilled to get my wallet back without the cash. In any case if I found a wallet I would return it as I found it.

All my major cards are now on their way. I didn't get anything back. I happen to have bad luck I guess, a real asshole swiped my wallet. I'm trying to keep it moving and get over it but it was so traumatic for me.

Thanks for everyone's kind support and sharing your stories of similar situations.

Only older people like myself could carry one
Canada discontinued SIN cards
They no longer exist
I'm in my early 30s and still have a SIN card. I mean, Canada just discontinued them three years ago, so there's plenty of them out there. Discontinuing them doesn't make them disappear.

Hate the feeling of losing cash / wallet.
Feels like your stomach has lost its bottom....
I do believe in Karma, such people do not go far in life!

I lost a gold ring when i was a teen. It was my grand father's (he gave it to me) and i was going to meet a girl and wanted to "impress". I took it out to wash my hands at the school (its where i was meeting her) and i forgot i took it off as i never wear jewelry usually. I don't know how it was worth, probably not that much, but i was sad to loose it since it was a gift from my grand father.

Like 2 months ago i almost lost my wallet. It was a stupid mistake from my part, had some old "working cloathes" with holes in the pocket, i still put my wallet there as i tough the hole was not big enough for it to dall. Well it did got bigger and the wallet falled on the street. I was just going at my neighbor's place to fix something, was there about 15 mins, when i came back i notice a wallet on the street, at first i was surprise, then i was like "fuck it looks like mine..." and yup it was...

I was lucky all was still in, with the cash and credit card. I live in a busy street, peoples pass there all the time, so i was SUPER LUCKY to not loose it. Not gonna happen again...

FYI....OLD original health cards are being retired...I was forced to apply for the new EXPIRING green health card last year....just means more BS time at the Ontario Services offices every 4 years.....at least the Passport office saw the future with a 10 year renewal now.

You should file that SIN card away. That is a key piece of information used/sought after for identification theft.

I had to assist a new worker in the country with a temporary SIN card and the government worker advised the person to protect their number by all means. He was not given a card as they are discontinued.

Myth
They send notices that it is time to upgrade to green etc all the time (I had at least 4 over last year, more previously)
Just IGNORE them
They can't actually cancel the red & white health cards
Tons of people read the scary mail and run out to get new health cards
Its what the government wants

Actually the cards are even flagged, I went to a hospital and was told call minister
Yeah right like I bothered

I would hazard to guess the clerk is just a bit too busy to keep tabs on washroom attendee's. But sorry you list your wallet.
