I have yet to see a good game so far this season, just lots of sloppy play. A number of teams moving or threatening to move, the CTE studies, and the usual player scandals is also probably tarnishing the NFL for the less diehard fans.

The on field product aside, the NFL is headed toward labour Armageddon. The owners are too greedy and cruel and the CTE related lawsuits are piling up.

There is a way to cut down the CTE problem, the players should wear the same upper body protection used in Superbike and NASCAR. They wear a stopper between the shoulder blades up to the neck, it stops the head from getting tossed around in crashes. And CTE is just as prevalent in rugby, perhaps their greatest player (Jonah Lommu) died at 40.

For years the NFL ratings increased. At one point in time they were going to peak and then decline.

Some other off the top of my head thoughts:

* Games are too long.
* Too many commercials.
* Sunday game coverage is from morning until night - A little long.
* The substance does not live up to the hype.
* Athletes using their sports podium to promote their political beliefs - Fans do not watch sports to listen/view that crap.
* The game is actually boring and fans are beginning to realize that.
* There are lots of other programming options to watch on TV, especially with the on demand options there are.

My viewership has changed over the last few years. If there is a good match-up I may stick around for the whole game. Usually I will try to catch the end of the games and channel surf to find a game that is close in the 4th quarter.

I think it boils down to the ever increasing cost of going to games, the plethora of other entertainment options to choose from, and the same 'ol same 'ol teams and quality QB's. Frankly, I'm tried of the Patriots, the Packers, the Seahawks, blah blah blah. I like seeing the Raiders rise because we need something new and different to cheer from.

My parents live in Florida and they told me they talked to a lot of families there, and they're not sending their kids to play football anymore, they're sending their kids to play soccer because of the CTE issue and rising popularity of MLS.

Maybe that has something to do with it??

TV ratings are down.
Attendance is down

Anyone wanna take a guess why this is??
All these racial protests before the start of games are killing the NFL brand. These protests are fucking more annoying than Black Lives Matter!

Don't know why the media is complicit in giving these guys disrespecting the national anthem any acknowledgement.

Slavery has been abolished so many lifetimes ago. Black people have been given equal opportunity. The ones that behave like gangsters complain about profiling. If you want respect carry yourself in a manner that commands it.

Give it a few weeks and ratings will be back to normal. Besides, other sports would love to have the TV ratings that football gets.

Let's be honest, if you had a child would you let him play football with all the CTE issues?? Knowing what we know now I certainly wouldn't. Maybe 20 years ago I would, but not right now.

Go play soccer, baseball or ice-hockey, kiddo

I think NASCAR experienced the same thing a little while ago.

....no matter what the media says, NFL is the most watched sport in the USA.
As long as the stadiums are sold out and people are watching, it still generates income!!!!

The cost of going to a game is very expensive and good seats are hard to get.

Asking people to spend 3 hours on a Sunday or stay up late on a Monday or Thursday is a lot to ask.

When I was younger and had no responsibilities I could set aside an entire Sunday etc.

It's the same reason I don't watch WWE..... just don't have time to dedicated 4 hours to Raw and Smackdown.

Oh and the 49ers and Rams have not been relevant for a long time..... so no surprise the Thursday night game was poorly attended.

Richard Sherman gave a great interview a few weeks ago. He shared experiences of profiling..... in college he went to a rich neighbourhood to help a wealthy guy move furniture..... the cops arrived at the door because the nieghbours saw a black guy.... luckily the owner of the house answered and explained the situation.

I think the types of interactions that blacks have with police is very common place.

The idea that blacks bring this all upon themselves due to their behavior is patently false.

If you don't think there is a racial double standard in the US then I don't think you have a grip on reality.
Phil's article also had to do with Thursday's game which predates the Trump stuff that happened on the weekend.

American fans leave sporting events before the end if they think the game is out of hand. Many are just casual fans.

While there's not nearly as many player on player collisions, soccer isn't exactly without its issues. Apparently, repeatedly hitting a ball with your head, while its travelling at a high rate of speed is, well, bad for you.

CTE is quite rare in soccer according to your article
It seems that way because the sample size they use is small. Note that the players used in the studies never received any major concussions during their careers, the one thing that linked the players was the fact that they all suffered repeated minor blows to the head over the course of their careers. Researchers have just started to turn their attention to soccer, my guess is because the scientists are mostly American, and its not the most popular sport in 'Muricah.

The American Youth Soccer Association has done the right thing by eliminating headers for players under the age of 10 and limiting practice of headers between 11 and 13.

Like I said earlier though, soccer is still way safer than football.

Thats smart. Their brains are still growing at that age.

The worst part about soccer is heading a soaking wet ball in the rain, that makes the ball extra heavy and can cause much more brain damage over the long term

Like getting punched in the head a bunch of times. While the speed and mass differs between a fist connected to an arm, connected to a body, delivering the blow, the person heading the ball extends their head toward the ball, thus accelerating the impact. And the brain is caught in the middle.

It's been said that the brain doesn't fully develop until the age of 25.
