Hi everyone,

Heading to New York for a week long work event. Any recommendations for places to visit for those who have been? This is my first time being in New York and looking to make the most of my time.

Buddy, if you're going to NYC and need to ask message board what to do.... My advice, stay home .

Christ - when you were a kid did ask your friends what to ask Santa for Xmas?

I suggest you consider one of the hop-on hop-off bus tours. They are reasonably priced and stop at all the major attractions in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Harlem. Besides the guided tour you can hop off at any of the stops and spend time exploring. If you buy a two or three day pass, you can use any of the 3-5 routes and treat it like a cab.

- Central park, specifically the John Lennon memorial (Strawberry Fields)
- Canal Road to shop for the knock-offs <-- this is a hell of an experience, ask to see the "secret" rooms
- Chinatown
- SoHo / Little Italy
- Brooklyn Bridge
- Wall Street
- Statue of Liberty
- Take the ferry to Staten Island from South Street Seaport (passes the Statue of Liberty)
- UN building
- Times Square / Theater District
- Radio City
- 5th Avenue and Park Avenue shopping areas
- Battery Park
- Grand Central Station
- High Line
- Trump Tower / Trump Central Park / Waldorf Astoria
- Trinity Church
- St. Patrick's Cathedral
- Lincoln Center
- Apollo Theater in Harlem
- Greenwich Village
- Seeing Manhattan from Brooklyn at night is mandatory!

There is also a bus tour for all the famous TV and movie sites which is pretty interesting. It willl also point out where many stara are currently living

Carmines on 44th and Broadway for family style italian...about 10 years ago wondered why eggplant parm was 28 then found out it served 4...so if with a group great place to go. I think they still do a draw for free book of Mormon tix outside the theatre...11 pairs...give them your licence and they draw out winners...but gotta give ID to enter draw...shit ...now you've opened a vein..lol..Nuyorican poetry slams are fun down in village...ok gotta stop lol..

Not sure what you are after. I lived in the City for years and got to know it quite well. One of the best things you can do is to ask a Cabby about the particulars of what you may want to do on any given night. They are a wealth if information, and, smelling a tip are very forthcoming. Do not be cheap here. If you can establish a good relationship, he/she can make your time. Try to use the same person whenever you want to do "something special". There is lots of this in the City.

Sadly, the 42nd Street of my youth has been sanitized. Maybe still worth a visit. Be careful of the street vendors.

That's really too bad! I have 3 great memories of that place:
1) The piano used in Big - it was a hoot to try it
2) The Harry Potter shop - I'm a castle fan and I bought a high quality model and floor plans which I've still not seem anywhere else
3) The Doorman - 20:10 super friendly and helpful

I'm from NY, and hate telling anyone to do this as I used to hate seeing them, but if you're in a bigger city and it's your first time......go with the silly Hop-On Hop-Off crap. It gets you acclimated to where stuff is on Day 1 and makes it less intimidating. If you fumble your way around on Day 1 getting lost, you're just going to be frustrated. The rest of the week after work, just do whatever you want.

You can also use that bus tour nonsense to pick what you want to explore more in depth. I'm from there and I don't know anyone that's ever been to the Statue of Liberty, or some of that other stuff. It seems like it would be way too time consuming on a short trip with work involved to do some of those super-tourist attractions. Perhaps not though.

Otherwise, if you have specific things in mind, like a list of must see museums, etc.....just Uber yourself about.

Eat lots of pizza. Eat lots of everything. Food is great. It's so easy to get around with the grid system........enjoy yourself!

There is or was a city bus that took you from downtown Manhattan up to Harlem and back again. Not sure about now but NYC buses only accept tokens, not cash.

I did a boat tour which was a cool perspective of the town and the double decker hop on and offs
