The game released yesterday in Canada. So many people playing near the rogers center, huge crowds all staring at their phones.

Once you catch all 151 pokemon they probably would have already released generation 2 which is like +100 more pokemon. Gen 3 is +130, gen 4 is +100 and this goes up to pokemon 756. And by the time you catch #756 they prob will come out with 100 more. Generation by generation the pokemon get weirder and weirder, last time I checked there was a pokemon that looked like a laundry machine.

This is the 5th day of playing it and its getting boring. Its giving me a tan. The bugs and glitches make you restart the app all the time. The bugs outdoors are also annoying cuz they bite you. But you know at the end of the day when you show your friends that cp 400 growlithe you caught the look of jealousy on their faces is very much worth all that walking.

Don't pat yourself on the back. I read your post, and reworked my response to be similar to yours.

Pretty sad state of youth and man-children when it takes a silly game based off rainbow coloured cartoon characters to get them out of the house.
Well if you're as old as your comments make you look like, I guess you might not be around that much longer to see the world play with rainbow coloured cartoons that seem to get you all hot and bothered.

I have no problem telling people that when I was a kid we rode bikes all over town (streets and trails), played in the park, played street hockey. And simply.... gasp.... a bunch of us would just get together and walk around the neighbourhood or to each other's home. Some f my best memories was playing hockey or football where there was a mix of kids and people's older brothers all having fun playing till dark.
Finish this however you want

One day you will will be old too. And bitching about how in your day you got off your ass to play Pokémon Go unlike the lazy kids of today who spend too much time on their VR helmets and suits.

Welcome to the world of adults where what we did was best. Don't worry. You will get your turn.
Yeah.

Last gen people: We were active kids, played sports, did things outside until dark

Piano8950: We stayed indoors all day staring at cellphones. But there was this great game called Pokemon Go that changed everything. The objective is to collect brightly coloured cartoon characters meant for 8 year olds. The kicker is so innovative too. What you have to do is something called "Go outside".

Your disdain for my generation is amusing. There was this angry old man in my neighbourhood when I was younger. For some reason, he was always angry at the kids in the area, yelling for some reason or the other, and at times, just being angry for no apparent reason. You remind me of him right now.

What's actually funny is that I don't play PokemonGo and have never really followed the cartoon when it was on, but I know a lot of people from different age groups who are fans and do play it. They are a diverse set, many quite successful in their own right, some fitter then you probably ever have been. But I do find people like you, who are quick to put down others for their interests repulsive. You are the guy who is miserable for others for enjoying something, just because of some deep seated insecurity, or who knows what.

Anyway, feel free to go on your PokemonGo hate. I imagine this will be you soon enough.

Well stated. What a bunch of old miserable fucks complaining and bitching about every minute of their life because they have no one one left to love and realize no one loves them, they are pathetic and just count their days till their spirit or whatevet is left of their worthless existence dissapears and no one knows they existed. Bunch of fucking losers projecting their faliures onto others and just spreading their poison with no meaning and they can't even begin to understand what is going on...which is typical of their kind.

I think its exciting that this game is bringing people together, bringing them outside, connecting and engaging on a whole new intelligent level. These pathetic losers complaining have no idea what they are saying. The can't understand the power of current technology such as mobilizing 100s of thousands within hours for a particular cause. or event. They think the world should always be the way they were used, that everyone should live a life they see fit and always project their failures.Bunch of pathetic closed minded dead beat rotting shells. There is no one else but yourself to blame because your kids failed and your life is shit and miserable.

Invest in companies that make portable batteries. People will soon discover that walking around with your screen and GPS on all the time drains your battery really fucking fast. Then they will go buy a portable charger so they can keep playing.

It may not be for you but you might know a few kids who could use the exercise this game encourages.
What it actually encourages (which is a common theme for freemium games) is spending real world money to get ahead faster

I doubted these kids will get their turn. I don't think they will live as long like our generation from lack of outdoor activities and exercise. I used to have an employee who plays computer games till 3-4 am and came into work late almost every week. He doesn't look healthy at all. Muscles are made to move. Use it or lose it.

Put me squarely in the "it's fucking stupid" camp.

But I feel that way about ALL video games. When I was a little kid (and I'm going to date myself here), I had an Atari game like this. I remember playing it quite a bit for about 2 years. But then when I think I was about 13 or 14 I got bored of it and put it in the cupboard one day and never pulled it out again till I sold it when I was in High School.

Ever since then, I've wanted NOTHING to do with video games.

When I was a teenager in high school, we did lots of things as a group of about 6 or 7 guys. We were like brothers. More than brothers in fact. We hung out after school, weekends, at school. We walked EVERYWHERE because none of us had cars because we were from families that didn't have the money to buy their kids cars. We ALL wanted jobs after school and weekends to make some money so we could afford to buy things or go to Mothers Pizza (as a group of course.) In the summer nights, we would get together pretty much every night at usually one of four houses and off we'd go walking. Usually to a park to play soccer where we'd meet up with other kids and lay some article of clothing to make a goal post. If it wasn't soccer, it was touch football. Every night.

I still see about 4 of those guys on a fairly regular basis.

None of us plays video games to this day. All of us are "responsible" adults now.

I'm not going to ever download this video game. I simply don't play video games. (But I will admit that from what I've read that this game at least gets people out walking, so it's better than most.) I have better things to do with my time and TERB would be enough of a time vampire thanks.

You can call me an old fogey, I really don't care. For me, a game like Pokemon holds 0 appeal. If that's what it takes to make me a target for derision, so be it I guess.

See, I love architecture, I love living in the city, especially Toronto. I am an admirer of the art of engineering and architecture. When I walk down the street, the LAST thing I want to be looking at is a dumb phone (pun intended). When I'm walking down the street, I'm usually looking at the buildings, the houses especially. I notice the details of the construction, what people have done to their older houses - from the moldings, to the masonry work, to the iron work, to the glass. To me the guys who design and build buildings are artists. I am always watching and observing how things are built. Even a street car intersection at say Bathurst and King will capture my attention. I'll look at the wires, the rails, the switches and I'll try to figure out how it was designed and then constructed. I love cars and to me, the automobile, especially the "right" automobile is a work of art. I'll look at the lines, the styling, I'll note the manufacturer, look for clues as to the year (with some of the older classic cars especially). It's the art of the automobile and I'm fascinated.

I'll also look at the people walking down the street, look in the shops, look at the dogs being walked, the racoon running across the street. You name it. I want to feel the energy of the city and to be aware of what is happening around me.

The last thing on my list would be to be looking at some pink and baby-blue blob about 2 inches square on a dumb phone. There is just so much else out there to look at, to take in, and to think about. Far more interesting and challenging.

++++++

All those billions spent designing and buying those games and the time spent playing is very sad

1 Create a game that does develop the mind

2 create a game that teaches skills or knowledge

The mind develops with use so develop the parts of the mind that you would use for survival such as organization skills or deveop the same part of the mind you use for math or abstraction etc

Such a development has been claimed by "brain games" such as Luminosity but the claim that it develops IQ is unproven with outside studies

All Luminosity does is make you better at Luminosity games and does not develop IQ, if it does develop IQ the improvement is not as great as if you learned a new skill or even did regular exercise both of which studies have shown does improve IQ

Sad

Very sad

PokemonGo is a game. Not meant for many who have replied on this thread, as they are too old for certain activities, including walking and possibly interacting with other people.

Recommended activities for said old people can include:

- putting coins into a machine and pushing a button in the hopes of winning a jackpot
- buffets
- complaining about today's youth
- complaining about high prices and lamenting on the good old days when cabbage was 5 cents a head
- complaining about immigrants
- pretending to be the generation that fought in ww2
- sitting while watching horses run around, and claim it's a better activity then a game they've never played

----

Pokemon was/is a cartoon from Japan. It captured the imagination of millions of children for a variety of reasons, and PokemonGo uses the tech abilities of a cell phone to somewhat replicate that experience. In a sense, many love this game for its nostalgic value. It's fiercely addictive, but unlike other addictive games, this one forces you to get out of your house, and get some fresh air and a light exercise. There are gathering points which help you obtain items, where people of like minds usually congregate, usually in a spot with some local significance. Many players have actually reported seeing a lot more of their cities, towns, neighbourhoods because of this game. And out of millions of users, a few were due to win the Darwin awards by doing something colossally stupid.
It's a great activity for kids. I see why it would appeal to them. Novel games that they can spend hours every day playing is what kids do. But if grown adults are playing it, it's quite sad. What camp do you fall into?

If you're 19+ you're not a "youth" anymore. You're be a young adult and what you should be chasing are material goals like money, pussy, and your dreams - not pokemon. Our youth are fine. The problem is when some of them (a minority, but significant minority) become stunted and instead of developing into healthy young adults they become manchildren. They finally reach adulthood at 40 years old, jobless and drowning in debt and disease.

This is the first Augmented Reality (AR) game and based on its massive success you're likely to see many others.

Nintendo's value has doubled since release.

Yes. I am a big fan of cryptic crosswords, trivia, scrabble, sudoku, etc. These things exercise your mind. I don't see how chasing a fictional character around town is beneficial.

Second. The same company, niantic, made an earlier game but it wasn't as popular. It also wasn't as advanced, it didn't have the video bit working, it was just map based.

But yes, every mobile gaming company will be jealously eyeballing they money this thing is making.

But how is it making money exactly? if to download the app is free?

In game purchases. It's taking in around $1.6 million per day, which is more than all other mobile games COMBINED. And that is with release only in the US, it hasn't launched yet in several key countries like Japan.

Whether it can keep this up is doubtful, people will likely play for aawhile and move on. But it will still likely rake in a couple billion dollars worldwide before it's done.
