As I said in an earlier thread, we saw two hotties play in front of our office. I came out and asked if they were catching Pokemon. They said yes with a giggle. So it can be a way to meet hotties.
I dunno you might get into trouble hitting on 14 year olds

A friend of mine has a kid that she can't get outside away from the computer. Obviously I heard about Pokemon Go and that you have to walk outside to play it. I thought I would try it and see if it might motivate the kid outside. It wasn't in Canada at that time so I got UK version and loaded it up in my office. It uses Google maps as a reference for the cartoon world that you walk around. Supposedly there was a Pokemon just outside the office building so I went out with a buddy to capture it. I turned around and the Pokemon was in front of me. The camera viewfinder came on showing the office but the difference in that there was a Pokemon standing on a rock in the viewfinder. You flick balls on the screen to catch the Pokemon.

I visited a friend on the weekend who (similar to many here) was talking about the stupid Pokemon app his employees were using. While I showed him the program, a Pokemon appeared in his kitchen and I let his daughter try to catch the mythical creature. Next thing I know my friend had downloaded the app and was running it. I ran out of pokieballs (ammo) so we both walked to a nearby park where there was a station (?) that let you get free ammo. Net result - we both went for a walk we never would have done if we weren't playing the game.

The stations are located at local landmarks with the idea you actually learn a little about your area. There are larger areas called a 'gym' where you can meet and do battle with other players but I haven't gotten that deep into it. My conclusion : It is a game designed to get kids/adults out and walking. It uses a combination of GPS & limited virtual reality with your camera viewfinder which I have not seen before.

There are those who like old men will pooh-pooh anything new or different - but for those a little more open minded I suggest you try it. It may not be for you but you might know a few kids who could use the exercise this game encourages. (BTW: It is now available as a free download - Android & iPhone - in Canada)

I read somehwere it was ran by the CIA?
You are thinking of Facebook. Facebook has GPS location, face recognition and voluntary submitted personal data on millions of people. I doubt knowing the number of Pokemon you have caught is data homeland security needs.

PokemonGo is a game. Not meant for many who have replied on this thread, as they are too old for certain activities, including walking and possibly interacting with other people.

Recommended activities for said old people can include:

- putting coins into a machine and pushing a button in the hopes of winning a jackpot
- buffets
- complaining about today's youth
- complaining about high prices and lamenting on the good old days when cabbage was 5 cents a head
- complaining about immigrants
- pretending to be the generation that fought in ww2
- sitting while watching horses run around, and claim it's a better activity then a game they've never played

Pokemon was/is a cartoon from Japan. It captured the imagination of millions of children for a variety of reasons, and PokemonGo uses the tech abilities of a cell phone to somewhat replicate that experience. In a sense, many love this game for its nostalgic value. It's fiercely addictive, but unlike other addictive games, this one forces you to get out of your house, and get some fresh air and a light exercise. There are gathering points which help you obtain items, where people of like minds usually congregate, usually in a spot with some local significance. Many players have actually reported seeing a lot more of their cities, towns, neighbourhoods because of this game. And out of millions of users, a few were due to win the Darwin awards by doing something colossally stupid.

funny thing is...

you go downtown, everyone is staring at their cellphones or talking on it in one form or another. hooked hopelessly staring at their cellphones. everyone has a cellphone in their hand and interacting with it somehow...all the time..24/7/365.

now, with pokemon go. their addiction to cellphones gets far more serious..

Simply put, the apps says a Pokemon cartoon character is located in certain places on a map. And some people go ape-shit going to that location and capturing said cartoon character.

Excitement is insurmountable as you stare at your phone to collect things like this.

Pokemon is a game. Meant for man-children and today's youth who sit at home all day staring at their cellphone and watching Youtube videos. Instead of meeting people, playing sports like street hockey or throwing the football around in the park, or exercising by biking, walking or jogging, it has taken Pokemon cartoon characters meant for kids to get them out of the house.

Their jaws drop in excitement as there's such things in the city like parks, trails, and city landmarks like museums, popular restaurants and monuments. All of which have been in the city for over 50 years.

So there is a game that, in your own words, takes people who don't walk or go to the park, out of their houses to walk and go the park. Guess I was right about my suggested activities for certain kinds of old people.

Besides the game play itself, a very good play in the stock market for certain companies if you play stocks. Nintendo market value has gone up by about 9 billion since it launched early July.

One day you will will be old too. And bitching about how in your day you got off your ass to play Pokémon Go unlike the lazy kids of today who spend too much time on their VR helmets and suits.

Welcome to the world of adults where what we did was best. Don't worry. You will get your turn.

The funny thing is that I feel that the old grouches here bitching about Pokemon are the ones being massively childish. Growing up, especially in high school, I came across a lot of my peers who put down certain things because they felt those activities or things were beneath them. That's what people who are cribbing on this thread sound like - high school bullies. Thankfully, the older I get, the less of these people I've met in my day to day life, because who really has the time to put down something that doesn't affect their lives. People are playing with an app on their phones, and for some reason, they are called 'man child' for doing so. That's reeks of someone who hasn't let go of his high school glory days.

Thankfully I don't know a lot of old people you've mentioned, the ones that grow old and bitch about youth. They may not get some of the stuff the younger generations are up to, but they don't put them down.

My initial comment in this thread was meant to be tongue in cheek. But some people really live up to the 'old fart' stereotype.

Don't pat yourself on the back. I read your post, and reworked my response to be similar to yours.

Pretty sad state of youth and man-children when it takes a silly game based off rainbow coloured cartoon characters to get them out of the house.

I have no problem telling people that when I was a kid we rode bikes all over town (streets and trails), played in the park, played street hockey. And simply.... gasp.... a bunch of us would just get together and walk around the neighbourhood or to each other's home. Some f my best memories was playing hockey or football where there was a mix of kids and people's older brothers all having fun playing till dark.

But don't get me wrong..... I bow down to people saying they got out of the house in the year 2016 because of Pokemon Go. So instead of staring at a cellphone indoors, it's staring at their cellphone outdoors.

LOL
