Blue Jays: 2016 Edition

Since the kids are asleep, the Jays beat KC, and I'm in a good mood, let's tackle this one.

When the manager asks for a volunteer pitcher from the dugout, the bottom rung players have to step up! That's the unwritten "baseball guy code". They ALL know where they stand in the pecking order. Even if JoshD or Tulo volunteers, they are much too valuable to get injured.

So the backup and utility guys HAVE to step up and risk injury to protect the stars. Barney and Goins in particular earned a lot of respect in the clubhouse for stepping up.

It sounds dumb and macho in this day of coddling 1st round draft picks, and pitch counts, but the fringe players had to TOFTT in this instance.

4 WTF do not the players have a say in this ???? I am going to balk at having to risk injury for one possible win in mid season and destroy my career and the manager must be sensitive to players feelings on such issues. He might have asked Estrada if he wanted to pitch one inning and he might have said no, we would never be told this

5 Look what it did to Goins FFS! Players have a right to decline non positional play and if they do it is kept quiet

6 Goins was asked to pitch hard because he is not a prime player and they can afford losing him. Same for Barney.

7 If I am Goins and Barney I am saying WTF ?? You risked injuring me because I am not valuable !!! Gee, thanks!

The TV guys said that there is no telling when Bautista might be back. They make it sound like he is on life support. Guys, it is only a sore toe. Maybe we should shut him down for the season?

Not sure how much is down to the manager. More like management over the winter who managed to put together such a strong set of starting pitchers. (Won't mention weak set of relievers though).

Not really, I've been consistent with my point that with Gibby the Jays will be hard-pressed to win a WS. A 3-game losing streak wont change that, neither will a 5-game winning streak.

Jays need a Larussa or a Lasorda to win it all.
OK, maybe thats a bit extreme, but a winning manager would certainly help things.

Go look up Gibby's managerial stats.
Then tell me if he has any business managing this excellent Jays side.

If he proves me wrong, and we do win the WS, I'll be the first to admit I'm wrong

I think they're pretty closed performance wise except the RBI production. Jay Bruce looks pretty good with 60RBI in the Jays lineup.

For any manager/team to win a WS, so many things have to go right. Health, players playing to their potential or even career years, GM having a budget with which to compete and making all the right moves etc. and most of those things the manager can not control.

When you bring up a La Russo or a Lasorda or a La Anderson (Sparky), guys who have won multiple WS's (some with multiple organizations), you are talking generational managerial talents, guys who consistently had winning teams year in, year out over many, many seasons. They come around pretty rarely.

Who in baseball, currently, would qualify as being in those guys' class? Boche? Francona? Maddon? Maddon has a rep as a genius but has yet to win a WS.

IMO, the Jays have lots of talent and those talented guys seem to like and to play hard for Gibbons. I think they have a chance but as I said, lots of things have to go right. Having said that, I think he's gone if they don't come closer than last year (ALCS game 7?) and I wouldn't complain. Shapeero will be making some major changes and a managerial change would be appropriate.

Last year was very exciting and I am hoping for more of the same this year.

Sounds like JB's gonna be doing a lot of DH'ing when he gets back. As much as I like Zeke, he always seems to be a better part-time role player than an everyday player. Started off strong this year and last and then got cold when he was asked to carry a heavier load.

Maybe we have to add a OF. Storen for Revere?
