On the topic of EE and JB and their contracts. I'd still like to see one or both stay. I'm too lazy to back track through the thread... but why would it be impossible to keep them?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/2016-payroll-salaries.shtml
Baseball is a business and the Jays salaries are at the link above. We have a total payroll of just under $150Mil this year. The key column is 2017. we have committed to Tulo ($20m), Martin ($20m), JoshD ($17m), Happ ($13m) and Estrada ($15m). That's $85M for 6 players.
Rogers probably won't let Shapiro go above $160m in 2017. The FA under 2017 means that player is going into Free Agency and is due a big raise. In particular, Joey Bats is prob going to get $27m per and Edwing about $23 per for 4 years each. $85 + 50 = $135m is over 85% of the estimated payroll for just for 8 players.
Other FA's like Chavez, Cecil, Smoak and Saunders are also due pretty big raises and will prob get something like $5m to $10m each.
So then, why not trade Tulo or Martin to free up space for EE and/or JB. Well, other teams won't want to take on those big salaries without exchanging some in return. So we're kinda stuck with them or we give them up in a lopsided trade.
If I had to make a wild guess, I would say they will sign one of JB or EE but not both.
More to Shapiro's style is to sign a young-ish guy who has a breakout year. If Saunders continues to have a big year, I can see them giving him $40m over 4 years.
