Well let's not get ahead of ourselves. We've gone 7-1 scoring a bunch of runs against a couple of weak pitching staffs in Phil and Baltimore.

We also got shutout by a no name rookie. And before that Detroit shut down our batters. So let's keep it in perspective.

We are trending the right way but will need Tulo and JB to get healthy before we make a serious run at the playoffs.
We've made up 5 games in a month and have joined Boston 1 game back of O's. I be thinking that's a "serious run at the playoffs"...

Saunders has a beautiful long swing.

Aren't you glad we didn't sign Jimenez a few years back?

Baltimore pitching is horrible. It's going to be like batting practice against Gallardo & Chris "Launching Pad" Tillman the next few days.

On the topic of EE and JB and their contracts. I'd still like to see one or both stay. I'm too lazy to back track through the thread... but why would it be impossible to keep them?
http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/TOR/2016-payroll-salaries.shtml

Baseball is a business and the Jays salaries are at the link above. We have a total payroll of just under $150Mil this year. The key column is 2017. we have committed to Tulo ($20m), Martin ($20m), JoshD ($17m), Happ ($13m) and Estrada ($15m). That's $85M for 6 players.

Rogers probably won't let Shapiro go above $160m in 2017. The FA under 2017 means that player is going into Free Agency and is due a big raise. In particular, Joey Bats is prob going to get $27m per and Edwing about $23 per for 4 years each. $85 + 50 = $135m is over 85% of the estimated payroll for just for 8 players.

Other FA's like Chavez, Cecil, Smoak and Saunders are also due pretty big raises and will prob get something like $5m to $10m each.

So then, why not trade Tulo or Martin to free up space for EE and/or JB. Well, other teams won't want to take on those big salaries without exchanging some in return. So we're kinda stuck with them or we give them up in a lopsided trade.

If I had to make a wild guess, I would say they will sign one of JB or EE but not both.
More to Shapiro's style is to sign a young-ish guy who has a breakout year. If Saunders continues to have a big year, I can see them giving him $40m over 4 years.

The Jays had a near-done deal Saunders for Jay Bruce but someone failed a physical. They are both having monster years.

Gallardo had our number last year, and Tillman is likely an All-star this year. I remain cautiously optimistic.

I'm not sure the Jays can sign both EE and JB, it may all come down to numbers. EE is tearin opposing pitchers new assholes but JB is the clubhouse shaman. Look at how many of the Jays hitters have adopted his swing and EE depends on him to deal with the press. EE is not the book lernin type like JB.

I've heard The Manalist say that Sancho will be going to bullpen, they don't want a repeat of Brandon Morrow's fate. If Morrow is the guidepost for developing Sancho, then I have to agree. Morrow had nasty stuff when he was first called up. But he was, like Sancho, rushed through the system and he blew out his arm. Now he's attempting to find a minor league place. It will be either Floyd or Hutch that takes his place in the starting rotation.

Jays started to improve with the bats around the same time the Raptors were knocked out. Co-incidence?

True. But look at Edwin. He might have have been angling for 20 mil prior, but with what his numbers will likely be at the end of the season he's looking at 25 mil now.

yeah, but it's still way to big of risk to sign a guy when his contract is not even over. Who knows what could happen to the guy between now and September/October.

So, if the Leafs managed to dump the massive salaries of Phaneuf and David Clarkson, then the Jays should maybe bring in
Brendan Shanahan to move Tulo? :)
.
If Shanny can use his Jedi mind tricks to move Tulo then he should be the Pres and GM of the Jays. ;)

Edwin's stock is on the rise and your numbers seem right. OTOH with JB slumping and getting injured, his stock is dropping by similar amount.

Russ Martin is batting .231 since May 1st.
Here's Russ Martin's batting average for the last 7 years:
2009 .250
2010 .248
2011 .237
2012 .211
2013 .226
2014 .290
2014 .240

What we are seeing (since May 1st), IS Russell Martin.

Now, if Mr. Martin could get back to his career average defensively, all is well.
Russ Martin is hitting .277/.380/.494 over the last month.

Martin's contract makes him almost untradeable. I'd prefer to keep him anyways. Great clubhouse guy and calls a very good game. Plus he's Canadian.

Yes.
Also started winning when Tulo went got injured which is not a coincidence.
Freed up Barney playing time and he's running with it. Given that he is a career less than .300 OBP guy it's not sustainable though. Clearly we are a better team when Tulo is in the lineup.
