Fuuuuuuuuuuck Limbaugh
Do you know what "cough, cough" means?

It is our duty as the dominant species to protect and preserve the life on our planet and so far with all the pollution and extinction we have failed miserably.
While I agree that it is a measure of our civility to be kind to animals and to protect wildlife, this duty you speak of is different than saying that animals have rights. As the dominant species, like you say, we can make exceptions, like they did in this case. (Unfortunately).

When animals tear each other limb from limb ut is usually for food. Fighting over dominance tends to be less lethal.... mind you that varies from species to species.
Right, but for food and survival of the species (example, mama bear kills suspected predator of her young, but not for food, or there is a fight between species over territory, although latter might not be lethal).

Point is, in the wild, food is the common currency. It would be a violation of rights between humans to kill each other for food or money. There is no such concept with respect to animals. Caring and ensuring that animals flourish or survive, is a privilege bestowed upon the animal kingdom by humans. It's not a right.

But that wasn't the choice, the choice was between the life of a child or the life of a gorilla. Again, feel free to sacrifice your own offspring, for the betterment of the animal kingdom, if you feel so strongly about it.

It's easy to be an armchair quarterback when it doesn't affect you or those you care about. Just as it's easy to believe that all animals are "innocent" and valuable when you're so far disconnected from the realities of wildlife.
In the immediate case, that was the choice the zoo felt they had to make.

However, the real choice is between having animals, at least mammals in zoos or not, Many mammals and birds have rich social lives, and IMHO it is despicable to take as an example this gorilla from his mother as a youngster and keep him in a concrete cell without interactions with his own species for life.

If a superior species one day arrives from outer space to this planet, we humans deserve no mercy

And no, it's not because I "eat meat" that I'm okay with the decision to shoot the gorilla. It's because when seconds count, you don't have the time or luxury to fuck around with something as unreliable as a tranquilizer. The eating meat thing was just calling you out on your self proclaimed "animal lover" bullshit.
I understood exactly what you meant.

I agree that they made the right decision.

Even other zoo keepers, people who LOVE animals, who care for them, who feed them, who handle them, and who know them and how they behave, understand that using the tranquilizer gun was risky at best.

It's an unfortunate incident. That silver-back gorilla is a magnificent beast of the wild, and it's sad that it happened, but it is what it is. Hopefully, this will put all zoos on notice to ensure their enclosures are safe going forward.

Dolphins and lions practice infanticide, bears have been known to cannibalize cubs. There are plenty of animals that do shitty things to each other, on a regular basis.

And there are those who are even more batshit crazy, like PETA, who believe that pet ownership is cruel, even if the animal is afforded, by most standards, a good life as a consequence.

So now you want their enclosures to be even more unnatural and confining? Thought you were an animal lover.

danmand, someone I was speaking to about this subject said that animals in captivity, particularly endangered species, can be used to breed offspring.

Maybe this was the case for this Gorilla?

What did they do with the dead gorilla? Did they feed him to the lions? I sure hope they didn't waste the meat.

Right too on both counts!

No, this gorilla was taken from his mother at a young age and reared by people. He spent some time in the zoo with other gorillas, but has been solitary for a long time.

If you are in favour of breeding endangered species, a Zoo in Cincinnati would seem to be low on the list of near-natural environments for a Gorilla

In my opinion, there are no longer any rationale for zoos and waterparks, for the entertainment of humans, when it clearly inflicts suffering on the animals. There are enough films and soon VR of wild animals in their natural habitat to entertain and educate children. I refuse to go to a Zoo or Waterworld, I make the exception for Game farms, as they exist in South Africa, where the animals are given an environment that is close to a natural habitat.

Same as what happened to wild animals in Circuses, I suspect that old fashioned Zoos will be a thing of the past within the next generation.

You just stated the rationale....
No need to post that, Fuji. we all know your religious fundamentalist views, that you spew every day here on Terb, namely that animals are put on this planet for the benefit of humans, and that God gave his very own people, the Jews and the Christians, the right and responsibility to rule over all other people, with no consideration for the suffering of others.

I would call your views psychopathic, but seemingly, most people here on Terb agree with you

You sound like you may need to take your meds, not enough attention as a child or something?

I'm not religious. You are applying the wrong stereotype.

Now you will have to go see if you can find a real argument.
