Brought this thread back because it convinced me to try low carb.

After YouTube taught me how easy to do, I lost four pounds in first three days. Most of that was water as carbs hold water, I am told. After that I lost three pounds per week. I lost 28 pounds according to my $20 scales.

Then I started drinking. I just drank pure alcohol (whiskey, gin, vodka and tequila) as alcohol has no carbs. I gained weight. This puzzled me. It turns out your body burns alchohol for energy so while you drink you will not burn fat for energy. I stopped drinking and I am losing 2-3 pounds per week.

The 17 day diet - I lost 10 lbs. in the first 2 weeks - 25 lbs total
Bullshit diet meant to make Dr. Mike Moreno rich. Total rip off of low carb diet. His cycling theory after day 17 has no scientific evidence and is made up crap to sell his rip off book.

I suspect even the low carb diet is BS. It may work simply because you eat less.

The real value of the low carb diet fad may be that it demonstrates protein makes you feel full so you consume less calories, and that is new knowledge.

Fuck it, all I know is that I am losing weight on the low carb diet and I feel OK. After I lose 40 pounds, I will go get a medical to check things out.

Absolutely agree, I'm Italian and I've cut out the pasta, that was almost withdrawal for me. But we don't really need it, stick to protein (meats pork and beef, eggs, fish and poultry) , veggies and fruits, nuts as well.
Stay away from sugars whether in processed foods or just added to your coffee , I can't be more explicit about this. If you follow these simple rules for those of you who are over weight, you will get back
to what your weight should for your size and shape. With much more energy.

Love great pasta. It was the hardest thing for me to give up and I am not Italian.

Try spaghetti squash. Once cooked, it comes out on as spaghetti strands then serve it like a pasta

Do you think Italians are fat?

They eat so much carbs in pasta and bread plus the carbs in red wine plus the alcohol they should all be fat.

I eat pasta once a week and noodles once a week. I just make sure it's no more than 1 or 1.5 cups worth which makes up a serving size. I lose about a pound a week but I burn a ton of calories in the gym with a strict and consistent (6 day/week) exercise regimen. I'm at a point where I'm having to eat more b/c I have no more safe body fat to lose. I'm no spring chicken, either. I weigh less than what I weighed in grade 12 and I was pretty lean back then.

I don't know why people complicate things....follow Canada's food guide paying close attention to what an actual serving size is and burn some calories in the gym and you're gold.

I too struggled with not being able to lose the last 30 pounds and then I simply stopped eating wheat.

The weight dropped rapidly, easily and OMG did I feel better. I lost 36 pounds in approx 90 days and my weight has been stable since.

There will be those who don't agree or don't understand how bad wheat is for you but it worked and continues to work for me. (see Wheat Belly)

Most important tip is do not substitute with a gluten free option or anything. The secret to success a life style change. I do not consume bread, rolls, wheat pasta, cereal, etc. Absolutely zero wheat intake and no substitute.

It took me about 30 days to get past the habit of eating wheat and once i passed that hurdle I have never craved wheat again.

It is likely important to include that refined sugar, diet free anything, soft drinks, and processed food are the number one reason why people are sick, unable to lose weight and or have diabetes.

For those that want to be truly healthy please read: How Not To Die - this book will shock and amaze you

I love spaghetti squash. Made some just last week. :)

When I was in Italy, the pasta portions were actually quite small which was perfect for me. It's more of a North American thing to serve massive portions of pasta. Whenever I eat pasta in a restaurant here, I can eat only about half before I'm stuffed.

Diet alone won't work. Its a lifestyle change!

The video, is of course a joke, but in essence the message is the same. Eat smarter and get some sort of exercise every day.

Doesn't get any simpler than that.

I am trying to figure out how you can drink and still lose fat and why alcohol has any influence on fat loss as it has no carbs. In my internet search, I cannot find a direct response to my query but I have derived a hypothesis.

Your body burns the calories in alcohol first but does not turn them into fat as they have no carbs. Because your liver is burning the alcohol it cannot turn fat into sugar for energy nor can it burn any carbs that are in your blood. Therefore, the carbs in your blood is turned into fat. Therefore, if you do not eat carbs before or during drinking you can still lose fat and drink but the fat loss will only occur when the alcohol is out of your bloodstream.

This explains why a lot of alcoholics are not fat.

Any opinions?

It does get simpler because exercise is not required. I have experienced profound fat loss and I do not exercise on the low carb diet. Also, losing weight is a diet, not a lifestyle change. To keep the weight off requires a lifestyle change. They are not the same thing.

You are also losing a lot more muscle with your approach. You can't lose
fat without losing muscle, but you can minimize it with exercise.
Exercise helps to build and maintain muscle mass which is very important for burning calories.
Plus exercise helps to strengthen your bones.

The older a person gets the more important exercising becomes.

I just can't imagine not being constipated on a low carb diet. Digestive issues must go through the roof with a keto/Mediterranean diet. can someone share their experience on this?

I actually found losing wait to be surprisingly easy. Cut everything from your diet but vegetables and lean protein. Then work out at least three times a week. I hate going to the gym as well, but found it easy to cherry pick a few cardio routines from various iterations of P90X. P90X3 is especially good since the workouts are only about 30 minutes each and lower impact than the original P90X. It was basically simple calories in versus calories out, no gimmicks. I found I could eat as much lean protein and as many vegetables as I wanted and still clock 1000 calories a day, tops. You'll miss a few key vitamins skipping stuff like dairy entirely, but an average multi-vitamin can fix that easily.

Switch beverages to 0 calorie equivalents, whatever they may be. Breaking the veggies / lean protein routine to eat out is fine, and occasional alcohol is fine, since the other 5 or 6 days a week you'll be taking in way fewer calories anyways.

I dropped 70 pounds and have kept it off for several years, despite loving the restaurant and cocktail scene here in Toronto and eating basically all of my meals out.

Oh, and weigh yourself every day. Yes, your weight can fluctuate due to water retention and many other reasons, but when you see the trend every day, week by week, going in the right direction it's highly motivating.

Replace deserts with fresh berries

Yes. I typically don't eat dessert at all unless it's fresh berries or maybe a small bowl of canned peaches. I tend to completely avoid cakes and pies unless it's my homemade strawberry rhubarb pie. ;)

I eat a ton of vegetables. Dinner is sometimes just a plate of roasted veggies - zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, bok choy, peppers, etc. (I realize three of those are botanically fruits but I digress, lol). Drizzle everything with e.v.o.o. and salt and pepper and stick it in the oven. So easy. :)

Lots of leafy greens and corn as well.
