They are both watching the ball.

The rule is that the centre fielder can call off anyone. That includes the infielder. Its up to the infielder to get out of the way. Its not up to the centre fielder.

Its not a matter of opinion- thats how organized baseball is played.
The centre fielder has the infielder IN FRONT of him, where his eyes generally face. Tulo is very good defensively, but he does not have eyes in the back of his head. If you think that it is easier for Tulo to see someone behind him than it is for Pillar to see someone in front of him, I guess I'm going to have to defer to a lack of commone sense. If you read my post, it says both players probably have their eyes on the ball.
I am very aware of how organized baseball is played, and you are correct that this is how the game is taught at basic levels, but at this level the outfielders defer to the infielders frequently. Have you never seen an outfielder back off on a ball theat they could get to while an infielder made an easy catch? There are lots of "rules" about fielding-infielders get everything they can to their left, corner infielders call off catcher on popups, etc., which are great at little league level, but this is not instructional baseball these are talented professionals and their natural ability sometimes trumps the rules they learned when they were 8 years old. You are correct, it is not a matter of opinion, I see these things happen all the time in MLB. That's how professional baseball is played.

Does anyone remember if Tulo was waving his arms? That is a universal signal for I am under it and I got it...in which case the outfielder stops charging. I think Pillar may be getting off light in this discussion..if he had looked up he would have seen that the all star shortstop had the fly. If Tulo wasn't waving his arms - it was his fault...but if he was it was Pillar's fault. You don't need to hear the arms waving.

ok he wasn't waving him off......thanks...but I do think Pillar should have seen him
Watching costanzas replay it appears that Goins heard Tulo or something made him aware that Tulo was taking the ball. Hard to say who heard what, and as I've said unfortunate but tough to blame Pillar but possibly preventable. Like a car accident-not always necessary to place blame but usually preventable.

Actually it doesn't matter whose fault it is. Shit happens! It is over and done with. Discuss the play with those involved to make sure everyone is on the same page and hopefully it won't happen again.
Lets look ahead not behind.

Though, you know....If Tulowitzki had looked behind him, this incident probably wouldn't have happened.

Personally, I blame the guy on the gravelly road.

Schedule:

3 with Braves
Then our last homestand - 3 with Red Sox
3 with Yankees
3 with Rays

Yankees are spot starting a guy from their Pen tonight, presumably to set up Tanaka for the Jays series. I am going to guess Jays are going to try to set up a Price, Estrada, Buehrle match up for the Yanks.
The Jays are not looking behind them to see who can catch them in their division. They're chasing KC for top seed throughout the playoffs in the AL. The last home stand of the regular season they should win every series including the Yankees series. Who cares if Jays lost to Tanaka again this week? We will beat up on the rest of Yanks starters. Nothing the Yankees can do if the Jays continued to win 2 out 3 from every series from here till the end of season. Starting tonight Jays should come home with at least 2/3 in Atlanta.

I like Hutch and it sucks for him, but its in the best interest for the team
I don't think the Jays play faovurites. Buehrle wasn't happy about having starts pushed back but he sucked it up because he understood the above.

yes a centre fielder can defer to an infielder, but its the centre fielder's call. if they are calling for the ball then the infielder has to get out of the way.

its not a little league rule. its the way the game is played.

Watching the game Gibby continues his standing up and spitting streak. I'm pretty sure this may be one of the longest this season.

Anyone have stats on my other standing and spitting streaks by managers?

I dunno. There's something a little off with Gibby's spitting tonight. Maybe he's got a sore throat or allergies or something. I'd be thinking about the 15 day DL or at least day to day.

Walter Alston was a brilliant stander, and a solid spitter.
He could also jam his hands down his pants with the best of them.

Erk! These are games they should not be losing. Mind you, I was surprised he kept Sanchez in there for the ninth...

Terrible game, tough to watch them lose to the braves. Another gamble leaving Sanchez in the game and he loses it again.
