There are only 5 BJ pitchers who have won twenty games in the history of the club - Clemens, Doc, Hentgen, Boomer Wells and Jack Morris.

Who of those would you call "an average pitcher"?

These "below average" Jays pitchers failed to win 20 - Stieb, Jimmy Key, Doyle Alexander, Ricky Romero, Morrow, David Cohn, Dave Stewart.

Maybe I missed some but I don't think I saw Gibbons sitting on the bench once all series and they swept. Maybe Nad is right.
I am right 68.9% of the time. The "sitting" difference is the location of the dugout. The one in Anaheim is a long way from home plate...compared to the dugout in Toronto. In other words, he couldn't see the game if he sat in Anaheim....not that it would make any difference the way the jays played

Inside information also has it that Gibby's ass was sore the last couple of days from some spicy burritos he bought at a Long Beach taco stand, apparently run by relatives of Albert Pujols.... Not that I am suggesting anything underhanded here.

Another great statement series. I love it when you don't just beat a team, you obliterate them. And you exposed them as a pretender and not a contender.

Jack Morris was 37 years old when he joined the Jays for 2 years in 1992. He was actually very average or below for those 2 years. The year he won 21 games he was allowing an ERA of 4.04 but he was the beneficiary of a great offense, defense and relief pitching.http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/m/morrija02.shtml

Albert Pujols is Domenican and works out with Robinson Cano and EE in the off season. But the possibility that Gibby got waylaid by chimichanga bombs may have merit. SoCal has the best Mexican food in North America.

Dickey toughed it out, buying time for the batters to mash. Now that Zauno's pick for MVP looks dubious does this mean he's banned from Fabricland?

Cripes you know a thread had degenerated when the state of Gibby's ass is of concern to the posters......

But I suppose when the team is playing this well that's about all that is left to bitch about.

It does. But I would rather they do it and fix the problem once and for all. The tandem of Goins/Pennington has great D and is still doing fine in the batters box. I'm certainly not worried about scratching together runs at this point.
I hear what your saying, but that bat just made a crazy offence, that much more dangerous. It's a tough pill swallow.

To bad because I really like the kid. Has a great attitude.

Angels claim to be "Still confident" despite humiliating series sweep in pathetic media statement.

The Angels held a meeting after Sunday's series finale against the Blue Jays, a 12-5 loss at Angel Stadium that finished off a sweep in which the Angels allowed 36 runs -- a franchise record for a three-game series -- fell to third place in the American League West and ceded their AL Wild Card spot to the Rangers.

"We talked about a couple of things," manager Mike Scioscia said. "I think everybody's realistic about this weekend and where we've been the last couple of weeks. But there's still a lot of confidence in that room and we need to bring it on the field and start playing games like we can."

Of the Angels' clubhouse, Scioscia reiterated, "The leadership in there is fine.

"The confidence that this team has needs to show up on the field," he said. "And these guys feel good about our team. We just need to start executing better on the field."

Since July 22, the Angels have fallen from 14 games over .500 to just two games over, at 63-61, and the series against Toronto was their worst of the stretch. It left them 5 1/2 games behind the Astros in the AL West, but they're only 1 1/2 games behind the Rangers in the Wild Card standings.

"We're right in the middle of this thing," Scioscia said. "And all it's gonna take is really maybe one good game, hopefully, playing the way we can, setting up on our terms and moving forward from there. Because these guys are busting their butts. They're playing hard. We just didn't do anything the way we need to this weekend."

On defense, the Angels dropped popups, missed fly balls and booted grounders. On offense, even with a five-run first inning on Sunday, the Angels managed just 10 runs in the series and scored in only five of the 27 innings they played.

And the Angels' starting pitchers combined for just 12 innings in the three games, allowing 21 runs (17 earned) for a 12.75 ERA. The relievers had to pitch 15 innings, and they allowed 15 runs.

"Nobody in here is panicking; there's a lot of baseball left to play," said Garrett Richards, who allowed a season-high nine runs in five-plus innings on Sunday. "I mean, obviously we're losing, but everybody in here is ready to play every day."

The season is closing in on its final month, though, and if the Angels want to make a playoff run, they don't have room for the mistakes they made against Toronto.

"Obviously when you lose, you're disappointed. No one like to lose," said Mike Trout, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI triple on Sunday, rebounding from going 0-for-6 with four strikeouts on Friday and Saturday. "We know we're a good team. We can't hang our heads now."

Clearly he is a member of this board and reads the comments. AK47 is closer to managing the Jays than we all think.

Just a few thoughts-I think the Jays would have to have a very bad series in Texas to make this a 2-6 road trip.
I wouldn't release EE quite yet, at least let him get over the 20 game hit streak. Although I bet it could turn into the longest hit streak in history to be split between two teams.
Tulo has pretty damned good pedigree-I don't think hitting first bothers him, he is just in a slump. It looks like hands are getting outside too many balls and he is rolling over and pulling the ball on the ground instead of keeping his hand inside and driving the to the centre of the field and the gaps.
Colabello and Smoak are doing a good job, but I am quite sure that EE has established a performance level over the last few years that they have not. If I'm the opposition and you take EE out and insert either Cola or Smoak in a key offensive situation I'm pretty happy.
I think Dickey's arm was tired in the first inning yesterday but got untired after that. On the same note, the runner called out at second on the appeal probably came off the base because of tired feet.
Tulo has been great in the field-rock solid and very smooth. He and Goins work extremely well together.
Lot of people on here have been fixing the Jays offence. Gibby did a good job of that this weekend with the perfect amount of tinkering-NONE !!!! They are a great offense, baseball's best. Why do they need fixing?
After very weak first outing, Lowe has been great.
I like Devon Travis, but this team is fine with Goins at second base. His defense is impeccable, and he chips in a bit on offence. Even though the Jays have a few weak bats, when the bottom half of the order contributes it's like pulling the pin on a hand grenade-the explosion is inevitable.

Many on this thread have relegated Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion to the scrap heap in favour of a) a second-tier starting pitcher or b) prospects. Can one not notice how idiotic that would be? Encarnacion and Bautista are elite hitters with a lot of tread left on their tires. Bautista has 29 homers with 84 rbi with a huge on base percentage so far Edwin is only slightly behind. They are still considered top ten power and rbi clubbers. I can't understand the comments hereon that denigrate first-rate hittters like these fellows or to think that the club would even hint at trading them.

Anyone who suggests Bautista and EE should be shipped out are in need of a lobotomy. They have given so much to this club, ask Donaldson how important they are.

Sweet Caroline Cameron's comment on the Jays: " If I swept as often as the Jays, my condo would repel dust".

She is even hotter in person than she is on air. At the Roger's Cup it took a major act of willpower not to plant a big sloppy smooch on her.

Agree, but they are both north of 30 and have suffered various injuries. The Jays should consider spending the $31million on two young power hitters (think of the future). Great offense, great defense and great relief pitching made R.A. Dickey a winner yesterday despite surrendering 5 runs.
