The position players on the Jays have to be getting frustrated. They give the team a good lead only to watch the pitching staff allow it to erode.
Jays have to find some effective relief pitching in order to make the post season and they will need an effective closer if they are going to advance in the post season!

Maybe. OTOH, baseball is a marathon not a sprint and every player has his ups and downs throughout the season. So they could be more philosophical about the losses than the fans are. The fans want the team to run the table like an NFL contender. In baseball, it doesn't happen that way.

Osuna = the new closer??

NYY go on a road trip to Astros and Angels after their Phillies series. This could separate the men from the boys.

I think your 'maybe' maybe just that!

Osuna....I thought about that too and as much as I like him I hope they close by committee as they have already screwed one promising rookie up this year, by naming him closer before he was ready.

In MLB All-star voting the gap between the Royals 3B man and Donaldson is down to less then 33,000(down from 1.6 million).
Get on the MLB site and vote ! ... if you have not done so already.

I could argue that Russell Martin has had a greater impact on the Jays than Donaldson. Without him the club would be bringing up the rear with the Red Sox.

Osuna is 20 years old, his occasional yips have to be forgiven. He's a smart pitcher and could be around for a decade - if the Jays develop him properly.

well, the genius manager is benching Martin, Donaldson and Goins tonite.....anybody have any idea why? If there is no reason, then he has to go now! But hey Rasmussen and Redmond are here to save the pitching staff

and if you just want an adequate starter...why is Felix Doubront in Buffalo?
So, are you criticizing the manager for bringing up Rasmussen and Redmond? Seems like that when you connect your statement to the ill informed cheap shot.
Generally in sports terms, "benched" refers to some sort of punishment or reaction to an event. A player may get benched for not hustling or perhaps he's not playing well. There is nothing that indicates that any of the 3 players were "benched" They are being rested. It happens in baseball. There is a reason for it. It can be an investment in the long term good of the team. Check and see how many players played 162 games last year. Then check and see how many catchers caught 162 games., and while you're at it check and see how many light hitting infielders played 162 games on the strength of their defense. What you will find is that there just may be a reason to rest players. So, in answer to your question, I and others who know anything about the game would have an idea why these players are not in the lineup tonight.

The 'benched' players are back in the line up tonight. Is this OK with you or after last night's win should have stayed with that line up?
I think we need to see the batting order first. There may be something there to criticize as well.

Considering what a fuck up Gibbons is, what does that say about the rest of the AL east?

Speaking of which, the division has played well of late. At one point they were about 6-8 games below .500 and the NL central was 24 games over. Now the AL east is 12 games over and NL central is 13 over.

yes, you rest your catcher....but resting 3 starters in the same game? Glad it worked out. OK, i am resting myself tonight as punishment for my bad post yesterday...

I hear this on a regular basis.

Exactly what has John Gibbons fucked up?

Here
A carpenter can only work with the materials supplied to him.
Well, he has been supplied with lots of talent.

I am one of those who is very critical. He is a good strategist and plays the percentages rather well. He also come across as a nice guy, too...

But he lacks the people talents needed to meld a bunch of (young) men into a consistent, winning team: he does not know how to deal with that part of the game that lies between the ears of his players.... that is, what makes a manager a good or great manager.

The Toronto Blue Jays have once again reshuffled their bullpen and while manager John Gibbons didn’t expressly say Roberto Osuna is his new closer, it sure sounds like the rookie right-hander is first choice for the ninth.

Brett Cecil is being backed out of the role after allowing eight runs in his last three appearances, a span that includes a nervous save, a blown save and a loss, to "see if we can get him back on track," Gibbons said Tuesday.

Osuna, who struck out five batters en route to a two-out save Monday against the Tampa Bay Rays, opened some eyes and when asked if he’d be the top option for the ninth on nights when he’s available, Gibbons replied: "I thought he looked pretty good (Monday) night. We might need him before (the ninth), too."

Steve Delabar is another possibility, and the Gibbons said the Blue Jays were "not yet," ready to define roles.

"We’ll see how it all plays out," he added.

As part of the shuffle, Bo Schultz will also be given additional responsibility. The hard-throwing right-hander has allowed two earned runs in 10.1 innings of work since his recall.

"We’re going to move him back, give him a more valuable role, see what he does," said Gibbons. "He looks good."

The Blue Jays will need additional options to help get the ball to whoever pitches the ninth, as that’s when the majority of their blown saves have come.

"Sometimes it’s tough to get to the ninth inning," admitted Gibbons. "It’s not easy to pick it out sometimes."

Really need the win today or Jays drop 4 games back of the Rays.
Anyone see the Phils winning their series against the Yanks in NY?

I believe that Phils have already taken the first 2 of 3. Going for the sweep today. Oagre hopes for the big Yanks' fold that he has predicted in this thread to actually come about.
