Either have to pay the price for Papelbon or find another starter and move Sanchez(when and if he returns) to closer. Cecil is an adequate reliever but IMO he does not have the stuff to be a closer, physically or mentally. Is there anybody else available that could help?

I understand that there have been talks about Papelbon, but Phils are asking a lot for him. After all, he's a first rate piece of property and everybody needs good arms.

Until the last couple of nights, a closer was WAY down the list of priorities. We hadn't had a legitimate close opportunity for weeks, as our wins are usually blow outs.

The alternative is to bring in another starter, either by trade or promotion from the organization, and move Sanchez to closer.

Jays and Cubs supposedly are front runners, but other clubs are also scouting Papelbon:

http://hardballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/06/19/jonathan-papelbon-drawing-heavy-scouting-presence/

Jonathan Papelbon drawing “heavy scouting presence”

At any given moment the reported trade interest in Phillies closer Jonathan Papelbon is seemingly either non-existent or vast. Reality is probably somewhere in between, depending on how much Philadelphia is asking for in return and how much of his remaining contract general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. is willing to eat.

According to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com there was a “heavy scouting presence” to watch Papelbon’s appearance Thursday in which he recorded a nine-pitch save against the Orioles. Rosenthal also says there are “other teams inquiring” about Papelbon in addition to the Blue Jays and Cubs.

Papelbon has been incredible this season with a 1.01 ERA and 31/7 K/BB ratio in 27 innings, but because late leads are so few and far between for the Phillies his workload has been sporadic. He’s appeared in just 26 of the team’s 68 games, which is tied for the fifth-most appearances in the Phillies’ bullpen. And even within that nearly 40 percent of Papelbon’s work this season has come in low-leverage situations where manager Ryne Sandberg was just trying to get the closer some work after previously refusing to use him in more important non-save situations.

Papelbon has little use to the last-place Phillies and is still pitching like an elite reliever, so perhaps we’re finally nearing an actual trade after years of speculation

If you tour through the stats of pitching for other sad sack teams, there is potentially starting pitching available. Oakland is going nowhere and has some excellent arms, incl Scott Kazmir.

Seattle is also headed to the dumpster and has some starter called Felix King or some silly name like that. And so on.

I cannot believe that the BoSox rumour is worth taking seriously. Boston's season has collapsed. If they had anything worth SELLING, it would be close to fire sale time.
sorry...hadn't made it to your post yet when I pretty much posted the same thing....lol.

Yeah, I don't think these numbers work for the Rogers beancounters: $25.857 $26.857 $26.857 $27.857 , those being King Felix's salary, in millions, for the next
4 seasons.

I want my papelbon! oldtimers might get my reference. Anyway, watched him on Thursday afternoon blow away the Orioles in the ninth of a 2-1 game...13 for 13. Next night i am glad my heart is strong watching that ninth..Cecil just couldnt put batters away. Give the Phillies Copeland and Cecil..and a couple bucks

You would have to give up more than Copeland and Cecil to get Papelbon. I would prefer that the Jays make a move for the big Croat with the impossible to spell name. He eats up innings like RA and Buerhle, the White Sox aren't going anywhere. That would take significant stress off the bullpen and they would pitch better.

Ok here goes....Jeff Samardzija.

You can't deal Copeland. He's the only thing we have at AAA if 1 of our starters goes on the DL. The rest of the AAA rotation would be hamburger for any decent ML batting order.

Papelbon is going to turn into a daft auction with NYY, LAA, O's and us all bidding. And that's just the potential AL purchasers. In fact, we might have to buy him to stop the Yankees from getting him, I guess. With Betances and Miller and Papelbon, they would be playing 6 inning games!

Closers are too unpredictable to bank on. And unlike Papelbon, the big Croat wont be fazed by moving across the border. He has a favorite fishing spot on Lake-of-the-Woods, he even talked about building a lodge there with Brad Davis.

Stroman was talking about possibly coming back in September. There's your closer, if we can wait that long.

The Toronto Blue Jays have made calls to the Milwaukee Brewers about closer Francisco Rodriguez, according to Bob Elliott of the Toronto Sun.

Despite winning 14 of their last 16 games, the Blue Jays have struggled with consistency in the bullpen, ranking 15th in MLB with a 3.45 ERA and are second-worst in the American League with 11 blown saves.

Rodriguez could definitely help out in that area. The 33-year-old is 13-for-13 in save opportunities this season, with a 1.13 ERA, 26 strikeouts and seven walks in 24 innings for the 25-44 Brewers. The right-hander is making $5.5 million this season, with a $6-million option or $4-million buyout in 2016.

Addressing his team’s issues with relief pitching earlier this month, general manager Alex Anthopoulos made it known the team is looking to get help for the right price.

“We’re trying to get stronger in that area,” Anthopoulos said of his bullpen prior to this month’s draft. “If we can add to the bullpen and get better, we’d look to do that.”

Although the Blue Jays have contacted the Brewers about Rodriguez, that doesn’t necessarily mean talks are serious. Teams routinely check in on players around the league and the Blue Jays will have interest in many relievers this time of year.

I like the idea of getting a good starter like Samardzija and moving Sanchez to the closer's role... at least for this year because that would give us a shot at the post season.

Sanchez was excellent in relief last year and the available closers are going to cost much more.

Rodriguez seems to be a more affordable option. We could also use a starter as I read earlier this year that Buerhle is thinking about retirement after this season.

Boston has a higher rated farm system than the Blue Jays. They have plenty of trade chips if they decide to push them in.

Bottom of the 8th bases loaded and nobody out and the next three guys strike out. Bullshit, no excuse for not getting in at least one run. I have a feeling that was our chance and we're going to let this one get away. Hope I'm wrong.

Chance in the 8th to put this one away and another chance in the 9th to at least tie the game and they fuck it up.

When a team plays poorly and they lose, that's a fuck up.

When a team plays well and they lose, that's baseball.
