I get around.
The real scandal is the $90 million annual budget for the do-nothing senate.

And then there's the $3 Billion dollar Centre Block "renovations" that will take more than a decade to finish, plus this:
Senators' refusal to walk an extra block to temporary offices could cost $24.5M

Finding temporary offices for the Senate could cost taxpayers an extra $24.5 million — even more than the latest big-ticket audit of expenses in the upper chamber.

And it's all because of one city block.

The cost of temporary Senate offices in downtown Ottawa could surpass the $23.6-million audit by the auditor general by nearly a million dollars if the Senate doesn't agree to extend its search boundaries by a single block, an internal government document shows.
Sticking with the current boundaries means Public Works would face a much costlier tender process, rather than being able to negotiate directly with a landlord.

The result would cost taxpayers $24.5 million more over 13 years than the government wants to spend.
For the 'work' they do they should all just stay in their home provinces (if they even know where that is) and use WebEx to talk to tele-conference about who got the most free meals that week or whatever they talk to each other about.

Life's so hard as a Senator having to endure ice cold camembert. Life's also hard as an auditor working overtime and spending $25 mil to find less than $1 mil in improper expenses.

Look at hollinger- they destroyed the company and spent hundreds of millions of dollars to prove a fraud of 6 million?

Forensic Investigations cost a lot of money and is seldom worth the cost- that's why white collar criminals get away with it

They're expensive because they are almost 100% audits, although one would hope that they can narrow down their search.

Sometimes they have a deterrent effect.

I also read that white collar crime in Canada happens more so perhaps, because our penalties are less severe than in the States.

A mitigating factor, as GPI alluded to, is potential savings down the road due to the deterrence factor.

Few criminals think they will get caught. Those that. Misuse expense accounts never agree they were wrong
