His deal is front loaded, he'll make most of his money during the first 5 yrs. word is there is an escape clause that kicks in after the 5th yr.

Does anyone honestly think the leafs will now win the cup? Detroit has had better talent for the last 6 years and haven't made it back the the cup finals since they lost in 2009.

If gives them instant credibility ..

In a league where you pay non all stars big bucks .. This is chump change for MLSE

Hiring Babcock is not the cure all but it is a huge step in the right direction by Shanahan. Now in the off season, we will likely see some trades, my guess is that Kessel and Phaneuf will both be gone by the start of the season! :D

As recently as yesterday all the hockey "insiders" were saying Leafs were out and it was Buff or Det.

It shows you how little anybody knows unless they are directly involved with the transactions, be it trades, re-signings, free agents, hirings, firings etc.

That's why I get such a laugh out of all the TERB experts. How many in the other thread said something to the effect of "Leafs have no chance at him. Why would he want to come here. Illitch will outbid MLSE".

And another har-dee-har-har to the people who claim MLSE won't spend money to build a winner because they already make so much, why should they bother?

I'm not predicting that he will create a winner but it shows at least that they care, if for no other reason than the absolutely enormous increase in profits they know they will generate with a perennial contender.

great news finally. At least the Leafs has a better chance on being competitive in a couple of years or so. Time for the Leafs to clean house and get rid of all the deadbeats and complainers.

He & shanahan have a real chance at building a decent team, worthy of fan support. I hope MLSE doesn't ruin for these guys

TSN reporting there is no "out" clause so he'll be here 8 yrs. unless he quits or gets fired. Now all they need is some decent players for him to coach.

Mike should be able to teach the younger buds to be solid NHL'rs. Guys like Reilly, Nylander etc...will have top notch coaching, and systems that better reflect their talents.
Probably still not making the playoffs this year, but if they identify, and develop talent then the money MLSE spent will be worth it.

The Leafs had to sweeten the pot, he has two years of purgas in front of him before there is a turnaround. Now they need to go Michael Bay on the team and blow sheet up, hurry up and make Mark Hunter the GM.

I agree his biggest impact will be developing young players.

If they can spend this much to get a coach- offer edmonton 50 million for their draft pick

Not allowed to give up much cash in trades. It's capped at a few million.
