I agree his biggest impact will be developing young players.

If they can spend this much to get a coach- offer edmonton 50 million for their draft pick
Give it up. McDavid is going to Edmonton. I'm predicting the Oilers will finish higher than the Leafs.

Of course- the plan is to tank the next two seasons

The Leafs are not going to be playoff contenders overnight. We only have a coach, mind you a great coach but the players play the game, not the coach. Expect the Leafs to suck again this year.

I really think Montreal failed in not pursuing Mike Babcock. They did not want him because he doesn't speak French that well. Montreal is still living off the trama of their last Anglophone coach who was fired for favoring English speaking players over French and thus replaced by Scotty Bowman. The Habs missed out on the best coach in the NHL that could possibly make the Habs a dynasty it once was.

Holy shit.

Never saw this one coming.

Babcock is a defense first and defense second and defense third and defense ad infinitium kind of coach.

Hope the Leafs win under him. Otherwise, it would be like Horachek all over again, lol.

No need to tank. They are awful naturally. I wonder how Kadri will fare under Bacock if he (Kadri) is still around?
in the past he referred to Ron Wilson and Brian Burke as "Burkie and Willsie",... real smart.

will he have matured a tad?doubtful, he'll likely say he's happy "Babs" is on board.his nickname s/b "brick"

Wonder how many games will it take for Leaf fans to say "Fire Babcock!". The 2015-2016 Leafs season is going to be tough one. Expect a top 5 pick as part of the rebuild.

We can finally put the question to bed about where Babcock will sign and the 'experts' can change course and tell us why he did end up here in Toronto.

It certainly is there stupid policy but I think they would have broke it for Babcock who has some roots in montreal.

I think the bigger issue is they already had a coach they were satisfied with. My guess. Is they talked to Babcock agent, and they realized it was hardly a certainty even if they were a contender. And they stood pay. The other contenders were all coach less.

Montreal's French policy has brought in more great coaches than toronto has over the last 30 or so years. The policy gave the start to Jacques Lemaire, Pat Burns, Alain Vigneault, Claude julienne. Even Michel Therrien has had enough success. Of course Tremblay was a dud but that is about it.

The bigger issue was the media pressure cooker which made those coaches move on.

That applies to buying a draft pick? Can you provide a link?

Thanks
Why don't you provide a link that your fantasy proposal is allowed instead.

My observation is based on common sense. The nba has a rule that draft picks can be traded for cash (up to 3 million) and many late firsts and seconds have been sold.

If cash was allowed in NHL trades for picks how come no picks have ever been sold in recent times.

Do you actually know how little it takes it be a playoff contender? 16 teams make the playoffs in a 30 team league. Of the 14 teams who don't make the playoffs usually 7-8 are not officially eliminated until the last 2 weeks of the season. If being a consistent playoff contender is your goal, then that is pathetic.

They're cancelling the Lotto Max draw this week. Babcock already won the $50 million.

Nice to see new coach but unconventional to hire coach before you hire a GM ..

Anybody who says MLSE won't spend money can put that phrase to rest ..

The purchase of the Argos may be a blessing in disguise for the Leafs, it will keep Larry Tannenbaum away from the franchise. He hired Richard Peddie after Jim Devellano couldn't shitcan him fast enough, Peddie is from Windsor.

Peddie has taken most of the blame for the fate of the Leafs but pressure from above caused Brain Burke to make some horrible decisions:

The Kessel trade set back the development of the team talent pool by at least three years.

Total impatience with Anton Stralman. I was high on him when he started his NHL career with us, Burke got rid of him. Since then he's won a Cup with the Blackhawks and could win a second with the Lightning.

Bringing in Babcock gives the team credibily, maybe just maybe, the Ballard Legacy can finally be put to rest. Just keep Tannenbaum away from the team!
