when it bought by smartphone. telus decided to call me and offer 100MB of data for free for 3 months. the 3 months are up and they want to charge me money to keep the existing 100 MB of data calling it data flex. i said WTF? i called telus and told them to block the Data i am now thinking of switching to wind mobile for their unlimited Data plan.

I'm not sure I understand... they offered you 100mb for free for three months, which you got, and at the end of that three month period they suggested you start paying for it because it's no longer free - something you knew was coming? I don't see the problem.

Not sure I get it either. The reason to have a smartphone is to use data. A smartphone is only useful with a data plan because wifi is not everywhere yet.

So are you using a smartphone or a flip phone? You can technically browse the Internet on a flip phone, but what's the point since the screen is so tiny? One thing to keep in mind with Wind Mobile is that they use a totally different networks than Bell, Telus and Rogers so your Telus phone likely won't work at all on the Wind network. You'd have to bring the phone into a Wind store or kiosk to verify. If it's a relatively new smartphone: iphone, galaxy s series, htc, etc they should work. A flip phone is not likely to work.

100Mb isn't nearly enough. I was travelling last week. Between the plane landing and me getting into a cab I had burned through 115 Mb (according the annoying text messages that kept beeping through warning about roaming charges).

Switch to wind mobile. I have a blackberry when they first came out 4 years ago, switched to Galaxy S5 now and still with wind without a contract, just bought my cell outright. I top up my account on their website $40 plus HST on the 22nd of every month. I've never had a call drop, never had to call customer service, never had a problem.

Their internet works great, I have everything.
Text, caller ID, 50 voicemail messages capacity, unlimited in coming and out going, I use my galaxy as a hot spot to use my iPad while on the road, email to my phone etc etc etc.

I can't beleieve people are still using Rogers, Bell and Telus. I spend 99% of my time in the city so it works fine, there are some spots in Vaughan it doesn't work, North end of Caledon and out past Pickering area, but everywhere else it's great throughout Toronto, Mississauga, Oakville area down to Niagara Falls.

4 years and counting and I'm still a happy camper that I've never had to call customer service

They already shut 2G down. I made the mistake of buying one of their SIM cards and it didn't work in my old 2G phone. There has not been support for 2gG form them for quite some time.

AFAIK, Telus and Bell originally operated on CDMA and shared their neworks together. CDMA didn't use SIM cards.

Rogers operates 2G (GSM) and this is still operational. Bell ever operated 2G, AFAIK, being a rival to Sim Card-less CDMA.

Both Bell and Rogers, in fact all carriers, upgraded to 3G and that uses SIM cards. However, Bell has a more extensive 3G network than Rogers.

They use WCDMA 850 and 1900Mhz bands. I believe (off the top of my head) that Wind uses 1700Mhz.
The rest of the world uses 900 and 2100Mhz, except that they also use 1700Mhz in South America.

Since then, all carriers have upgraded to LTE or 4G (apparently 3.9G), with fallback to 3G and Rogers to 3G then to 2G. There are too many LTE bands to make sense of.

Oh plus Telus works in way more places at a much faster speed

Just never offered in Canada

Bell covers more of Canada because Bell + Telus are sharing towers
Rogers only shares with smaller brands (TBaytel & Videotron)

You really don't need that much data if you manage it by installing a dataswitch widget. The fact is, it is probably not a good idea to have your data on all the time as you are blasting your genitals with em energy when the phone is in your pocket. Plus battery life is shit when data is on all the time. When you use a widget you just turn on the data when you want to read your email and use WIFI the rest of the time.
