Democracy is a terrible system but still better than all the alternatives. Was it Winston Churchill who said that?
It does have some serious flaws, but it's hard to deny that it's created prosperity for a lot of people. There are still too many people being left behind, but we do have a very large middle-class in this country that other places do not.

Think was higher voter turnout this year. Tory only received 40% of the votes, compared to Rob Ford's 47% in 2010. Many more people voted against Tory than for him.
As with Rob, who couldn't motivate that turnout in 2010 with 53% voting against him. Another way of looking at last night is that over 70% voted against Ford Nation.

Karen Stintz was still the best choice for Mayor, but she came across as uptight before a camera. Chow couldn't seize the moment like her late husband could.

I'm more concerned that ford kept his $100k + seat in his riding. Even tho council will shove him into the back like a fussy toddler, he will continue to suckle at the gravy train trough without ever neededing to contribute anything meaningful. Just like the 10 yrs before he became mayor
He was an effective Councillor, but Mayor is too big of a position for him to handle. (I had a property in Ward 2 and Rofo represented all constituents well, and at lower cost than other Councillors).

He gets one vote at council, just like Rob Ford did.

The real question is whether Tory can work with other politicians, at all levels, as opposed to the buffoon who managed to get all his key powers removed while making Toronto the laughingstock of the world.

I think Tory will. He'll be a good Mayor.

I think Tory won because nobody wanted to see Ford or Chow get in. He was the Lesser of the three evils so to speak. Basically what happened in the Provincial election as well Hudak was too weak ,nobody wanted Horwath therefore Wynne won handily.

I don't think so.

This time, the vote wasn't split as Chow perhaps thought it might have been, due to Ford's past antics and his brother's bullying nature.

Tory is light years better in many respects.

Chow is too idealist but she's not too bad.

Personally I think Tory won because he ran (convincingly I might add) on the idea that he's the best candidate unite a fractured Toronto.. I know that's the # 1 reason I voted for him..

Stintz could have been a good Mayor, or a bad one. Either way, we'll never know now. She pulled out of the race because she didn't raise enough $$$ to continue. The Fords have their own $$$ and both Chow and Tory are connected well enough to raise the funds needed.

There was a member here who had that big "Ford More Years" ad in his sig pic. I'm sure it's gone now. All those who ever thought that a Ford would be a good choice for Mayor just got their asses handed to them.

There is a cure for the dreaded Fordpox this lovely city has suffered from for the last four years. We saw it on display last night.

Hallelujah!

It was a choice between "meh", "fucking awful", and "more ineffective bumbling sideshow". Seems Toronto had the wisdom to go with "fucking awful". Ummm.... yay?
Depends on how similar Doug Ford would have been to his brother. Honestly, I agreed with a lot of what Rob Ford was saying...it's too bad he tarnished his image the way he did and derailed his run.

Back to the days of Club Med for the City Hall execs. Back door hirings and nepotism galore will be a high priority on Tory's agenda.

Rob Ford would be wise to just expose Tory's corrupt ways and make that his platform for 2018.

There is so much waste in the City. You have one supervisor managing 2 staff or less in many departments just like Hydro. Ford was going to address this as well as push for the reduction to 22 councillors from 44.

If you listened to Tory when he was on 1010 he often commented on that exact issue. I hope he does something about it.

My God ... the Ford Nation is so gullible ... okay forget the lies and corruption concerning drug use, skipping multiple council meetings to show up on poilce videos conducting drug deals, the mayor of Toronto cavorting with known drug runners, murders ..... or the constant refusal to help police identify drug associates ...
how about David Price ???
"Price drew a salary of $130,000 after he started working for the mayor in April, which was double the pay of his predecessor in the job, according to police documents. Price's hiring drew attention because of his inexperience at City Hall. Before joining the mayor's office, he had worked as a financial advisor and had attended school with Doug Ford.

The Globe and Mail reported that several people interviewed as part of an investigation into Doug Ford said David Price helped the older Ford brother sell hashish in the 1980s.

This is the solid citizen that you want to tackle corruption ?

I'm not sure why some have a problem with the number of councillors. Its about 1 per 40000 residents. And really a drop in the bucket of the total budget. Better to be able to contact them.

It also gives a greater pool of possible candidates for Mayorial campaigns.

Your comparison is menaingless. Rob was in a two horse race, Tory was one of three major contenders.
