There are two ways to look at that. First way is that putting on a brave face and carrying on is somewhat admirable, shows a certain fighting spirit, a refusal to give in to the disease.

Second way to look at it is as the first phase in this process: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance.

We will hear the news tomorrow. If he is really facing death I would be inclined not to stand in judgment over the way he or anyone else handles it. None of us really have much personal experience to draw on in that area, and the people who have ain't talking.
Admirable akin to how he attempted to carry on under the influence of drugs and whilst under the pressure of being outed for his drug issues.. Not so sure any of it falls under the umbrella of "admirable".

Prognosis may be serious. Give the guy a break Ford-haters. He bowed out of the race & did not bilk us out of millions like the provincial government did under Dalton's leadership. He was fiscally responsible yet fell short when it came to his personal demons.

Addiction is a serious issue. Wish that Ford was given the opportunity to use his celebrity as a platform to raise awareness. Rob may be robbed of that chance now.

Hope for the sake of his young family that he may overcome this.

He fell short in his mayoral duties too.

I am a bit put off that he is still running for council. If he wasn't, then I would say hey he is a private citizen facing a tough situation give him some privacy.

But with his name on the ballot still at least the citizens of his ward need to ask the tough questions about his ability to perform his duties, his record, etc.

That seems like a fairly unpleasant topic given his circumstances, and yet it can't be ignored completely.

News conference on Ford's condition. He has a very rare type of cancer, malignant liposarcoma!

A type of cancer that forms in fat cells.

I hope his treatment is successful. I disagree with him being mayor but he is also a husband and a father. Enough said.

If there ever was a 'coming to Jesus' moment, this would be it for Rob. Hope he concentrates on his health first.

I admit I was wrong.

I thought it was some kind of conspiracy - that he really wanted to get his old seat back as Councillor.

It really is cancer.

He does need to concentrate on fighting this and not politics though.

Whether or not its true, why is the media making such a BIG DEAL about it? Do you know how many people are diagnosed with cancer every day? Cancer is like the flu now a days. Everyone knows someone who has cancer. It's very sad but shouldn't be BREAKING NEWS.

FYI... even though his powers are limited, he's still the Mayor of Toronto. LOL

Because the ramifications of this, his dropping out of the race, his brother entering the race, his re-entry as a councillor will affect the lives of 3 million Torontonians over the next 4 years.

And because the pasts weeks annoucements are pretty much unprecidented not just in the history of this city's politics, but pretty much anywhere.

It isn't the fact he has cancer, but all of the ripples that have ensued as a result of it.

A frank assessment of the family farce
Here’s the truth: the Ford brothers claim they are continuing to run because they love the city. But in doing so, they are placing their own family’s needs ahead of the needs of the city.

Right now, their genuinely tragic personal story cannot transcend politics because Rob Ford and his family will not allow it to. Rob Ford is offering himself as a city council candidate, and his brother Doug proposes to carry on his work running for mayor.

As long as they are running, they are the top political story in Toronto, because the Ford family’s rule and misrule of city hall has become, for a majority of voters, the top political issue in the city. In many ways, he personally defines the election. Still.

You have to give the guy credit for authorizing publication of every little last detail of his condition, diagnosis and treatment. He could have easily said he has cancer and nothing more. Boy, would that have ever driven the media bonkers. Take Jack Layton for example, you can't even find out what type of cancer he had.

I'm not a fan and think running for Mayor would be out of the question just on the medical situation but there is more than a good chance he will have his old councilor seat back just with the name on the ballot. I think that being back on city council will help keep the positive attitude he needs to fight the upcoming battle.

I used to look after a property in his old Ward 2 and they love him. He did a great job there. Mayor was probably too big a fish to swallow, frankly speaking. But he didn't attract as much notoriety as a Councillor. Less pressure too.

I wonder how he can do his job there too though, due to the uncertainty surrounding his affliction. Only time will tell I guess, and only if they elect him.

I don't think he will make it to election day, based on what we have heard.
You think he'll be dead in under 6 weeks?

He'll get elected to Ward 2 from his hospital bed.
