I'll also add that the UN Convention on refugees undermines the argument that giving Palestinians rights in Lebanon or Syria would annul their claim to return to the land of their birth. Sudanese refugees in Canada can gain Canadian citizenship and still have the right to return to their home country. Sri Lankan refugees in Canada can become citizens here and still have the right to return to their birthplace. Meanwhile Palestinians don't have the chance to be assimilated as the UN Refugee Convention requires and the ones born there have no status. The only other group I know who has the same corrupt system is the Tibetans in India where the government in exile agreed that India wouldn't automatically give out status (unlike with the Palestinians though, Tibetans in India can jump through enough hoops and gain Indian citizenship).
