The Chicago Worlds Fair was the first event to be lit up by electric lights, but it was not the first city to be wired for electricity. When Niagara falls was first harnessed for electricity in 1893, Buffalo, N.Y. was the first city to be wired.
I just saw a PBS documentary on Tesla.
Edison's DC system was the first to be put into commercial use in NYC lighting up Lower Manhattan in 1882.
Tesla's AC system lit up Buffalo but came after Edison.

C.Cat, baby, your answer is wrong, as anon1 points out. However, Buffalo is also incorrect.

Edison's DC power station on Pearl Street , NYC was fired up 4 sep 1882, - one DC generator powering 400 subscribers' lamps. The chicago worlds fair opened 1 may 1893. It featured Tesla and Westinghouse's AC generator. so, NYC was first - and besides, the Pearl St power station "powered the city", while the Tesla was basically an exhibit. The Pearl St station burned down in 1890.

This question is complicated and a matter of interpretation. ( BTW - I saw the same documentary on Tesla vs. Edison ) While the Worlds fair was lit up by Tesla, the whole of Chicago was not wired for power for that event. It is also true that Edison was selling DC power in a small area of Manhattan to a select few wealthy people that could afford to have this new technology in their homes. The first city to contract with the Westinghouse company to have the whole of the city wired for electricity was Buffalo, N. Y. When Westinghouse with the help of Tesla harnessed Niagara falls, Buffalo was about 30 miles away and it was also on the way to New York City.

The reason that Edison's DC power was not viable was that it would take two power cables 2 in. diameter to send power one mile to power a city block, while Tesla's AC power could do this with a 1/4 in. cable with little loss of power. The question was, Name the first city in history to be wired for electricity. Since Edison only sold DC power to a select few and the whole city of New York was not wired to receive DC power. Edison's DC power had severe limitations. The whole city of Buffalo was the first city to be wired for electricity with AC power and there were none of the limitations of power loss for Tesla's AC system.
