For me, this story every day becomes less about Ford and more about our society. Perhaps we're surprised at the extent of this guy's lack of control, bad judgment and overall stupidity, but we knew the basic facts about Rob Ford in 2010. The disenchantment with Miller and the hope for someone that would control spending go only so far to explain the public vote for this guy. In the face of all this evidence, his core support remains rock solid. What does that say about Toronto? Very very sad.
I would not like public outing any more than you would. However, I suspect it's unlikely you or I would have to face that situation.
Don't know about you, but here's the difference between me and Ford: I exercise discretion.
Plus:
- I am not on the public payroll, in the most prominent job in one of the largest cities in Canada/America.
- I engage in this activity on my own time, not office/public time, and in my own premises or in-call location, not office/public premises
- As mayor of any city, that person is accountable to the public, and his actions inevitably face scrutiny.
- Ford is the one who outed himself in public, as a drunk, a liar, a crack user, etc. The list is too long.
- The police are not engaged in character assassination.
- Police are investigating a key politician and his relationship to the criminal underworld in the city.
- They are documenting Ford's actions, through personal observation and witness accounts.
If character assassination is occurring, Rob Ford is the one doing it to himself, through his behaviour which demonstrates appalling lack of judgement.
But the "Toronto mayor / abysmal buffoon" character appears still alive and kicking.
As does his blind support.
Finally, Rob Ford is taking action, enough is enough already. He just declared that he will be taking legal action against his former staffers over false claims that Alana is a prostitute and that he was doing lines of cocaine at the Bier Markt.
I hope he sues more people over the constant slandering of his character.
