The real solution to deficits is neither cuts nor tax increases it is GROWTH. Business is not spending. Therefore there will be no growth without government stimulation and increases in aggregate demand.

How does the government stimulate the economy? By spending on needed infrastructure and by quantitative easing.

The best way to stimulate the economy is to increase the minimum wage, make unionization easire, cut taxes but only for the poor, if Canada, increase welfare and EI, pensions. Money must be spent causing economy to roar.
Tell all that to big business and watch the jobs leave the province.

That is the Hoover thinking that caused the Great Depression
Bullshit. Hoover did not directly cause the depression. Quite a feat, causnig a big economic depression just eight months after he took office. Get your facts straight and don't cloud your fucking mind with partisan bullshit.

Hoover, a globally experienced engineer, believed strongly in the Efficiency Movement, which held that the government and the economy were riddled with inefficiency and waste, and could be improved by experts who could identify the problems and solve them. He also believed in the importance of volunteerism and of the role of individuals in society and the economy. Hoover, who had made a small fortune in mining, was the first of two Presidents to redistribute their salary (President Kennedy was the other; he donated all his paychecks to charity).[SUP][2][/SUP] When the Wall Street Crash of 1929 struck less than eight months after he took office, Hoover tried to combat the ensuing Great Depression with government enforced efforts, public works projects such as the Hoover Dam, tariffs such as the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, an increase in the top tax bracket from 25% to 63% and increases in corporate taxes.[SUP][3][/SUP] These initiatives did not produce economic recovery during his term, but served as the groundwork for various policies incorporated in Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal. After 1933 he became a spokesman in opposition to the domestic and foreign policies of the New Deal. In 1947 President Harry S. Truman brought him back to help make the federal bureaucracy more efficient through the Hoover Commission.

What caused the Great Depression, the worst economic depression in US history? It was not just one factor, but instead a combination of domestic and worldwide conditions that led to the Great Depression. As such, there is no agreed upon list of all its causes. Here instead is a list of the top reasons that historians and economists have cited as causing the Great Depression. The effects of the Great Depression were huge across the world. Not only did it lead to the New Deal in America but more significantly, it was a direct cause of the rise of extremism in Germany leading to World War II.

1. Stock Market Crash of 1929

Many believe erroneously that the stock market crash that occurred on Black Tuesday, October 29, 1929 is one and the same with the Great Depression. In fact, it was one of the major causes that led to the Great Depression. Two months after the original crash in October, stockholders had lost more than $40 billion dollars. Even though the stock market began to regain some of its losses, by the end of 1930, it just was not enough and America truly entered what is called the Great Depression.

2. Bank Failures

Throughout the 1930s over 9,000 banks failed. Bank deposits were uninsured and thus as banks failed people simply lost their savings. Surviving banks, unsure of the economic situation and concerned for their own survival, stopped being as willing to create new loans. This exacerbated the situation leading to less and less expenditures.

3. Reduction in Purchasing Across the Board

With the stock market crash and the fears of further economic woes, individuals from all classes stopped purchasing items. This then led to a reduction in the number of items produced and thus a reduction in the workforce. As people lost their jobs, they were unable to keep up with paying for items they had bought through installment plans and their items were repossessed. More and more inventory began to accumulate. The unemployment rate rose above 25% which meant, of course, even less spending to help alleviate the economic situation.

4. American Economic Policy with Europe

As businesses began failing, the government created the Smoot-Hawley Tariff in 1930 to help protect American companies. This charged a high tax for imports thereby leading to less trade between America and foreign countries along with some economic retaliation.

5. Drought Conditions

Library of Congress, Prints & Photographs Division, FSA-OWI Collection, LC-USF34-9058-C
While not a direct cause of the Great Depression, the drought that occurred in the Mississippi Valley in 1930 was of such proportions that many could not even pay their taxes or other debts and had to sell their farms for no profit to themselves. The area was nicknamed "The Dust Bowl." This was the topic of John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath.

Then how do you explain the thousands of manufacturing jobs that have left the province during the Liberals 10 year run?
They also left during Harris and Rae.

So you can C&P from conservative websites. The excesses of the 1920s like the 1%ers, destroys the economy.

One of the great causes of depressions and recessions, inequality.

One of the great cures for depression and recessions, equality.

Not all are equal. I don't want to be limited by those who are less educated, less hard working, or less industrious. Reducing all to the lowest common denominator will destroy productivity and innovation. Get out of your parents basement and the earn your own way.

Why do you think the poor are less hard working, less industrious? You ever dig a ditch, go down a mine, clean hotel rooms, work at McDonalds?

Let me see I have many degrees, make tons of money, probably more than you, own about 6 properties....

The poor do the real heavy lifting in this society.

Where did I say poor? Use one of those degrees of yours to read.

Nice try buddy. Yes indeed I have, and even more menial. I now have a doctoral degree thank you.

I have known many people over the years who cheat the system, from one subsidy to another in order not to work. There is massive waste at every level of government. Couple of easy examples for you Einstein. The recent lesbian haunted house with funding from three levels of government featuring severed penis and a mirror so you can check out your own box. Gordon Lightfoot's son receiving six figure grants so he can tour with his band. Productive use of taxpayer's money?

In the most blatant theft of taxpayer money in the history of the Province, the Liberals blew almost 2 billion dollars to save 5 liberal asses in the last election. Worse still, they massively overpaid to get out of the contracts when the contracts provided for a lesser penalty, all to buy silence.

McWynnty set up 30 some odd citizen committees to provide advice and consultation. Isn't that why we elect people and employ people in government ministries?

But it's o.k. to cut OHIP coverage for seniors, eye exams, life saving medications and operations.

Municipalities hiring consultants to report. Isn't that why there are municipal staff? If they aren't qualified to provide the same advice, why are they still employed?

Tip of the iceburg buddy. The bottom line is that until the colossal waste is eliminated from every level of government then the government can go fuck themselves before they turn to the taxpayer again.

Go ahead and try and defend your socialist blather. You can't defend the indefensible. You sound like the fool you've proven to be every time you tap your keyboard.

Business knows they need customers, Henry Ford knew he had to pay workers more. Idle threats from biz. Taxes higher in every Great Lakes state. Ontario is a low tax haven.

http://www.thestar.com/opinion/edit..._is_not_the_time_for_ontario_to_cut_them.html
You forgot to add things like EHT, HST, WSIB etc into the tax rate. Piecing out something from a tax and calling it something else doesn't work. It still has to come out of the pocket of the business. Add into it our high hydro and wages and we are not an attractive market for many businesses to set up shop.

From the guy that makes tons of money and owns six properties...calling yourself names doesn't make your intellectual case.
Not me but the big guys are the biggest cheaters in society. I pay my taxes, all of them and I am happy to do it.

Nonsense. Business is not investing anywhere because it does not see the consumers available. We are smarter not to join the race to the bottom.

Protectionism is working very well for China. They have extremely high taxes on imported goods, rules that prevent greater than fifty percent foreign ownership of Chinese companies, and limits on how much capital can leave the country. We should give it a try too.

None of that has prevented a massive influx of capital and a tremendous growth rate, and they have a labor shortage.

Shot ones self in the foot

If you want to understand were the OP gets his ideas from,...its his hero, a 1800 century "economist",... John Stuart Mill, who was obviously an early communist adopter,...his idea of economics,... "Mill promoted substituting capitalist businesses with worker cooperatives."
Also,...a little bit more about the pinko,...he was a civil servant, when he actually worked.

But what I don't understand is,...why would some one like the OP want to jeopardise his life style by continually fighting the system he lives in,...makes absolutely no sense,...work the system,...get on the bus,...or be continually running to avoid getting run over !!!

Social Democratic Scandinavian nations provide higher overall standards of living, longer lives, greater fairness, more gender equity, greater freedom, better lives and more efficient societies. They are far better run nations overall. They look like Canada would look if the NDP won the next 10 elections at all levels. Higher taxes? They gladly pay for vastly superior services.

Why did you even quote my post,...you didn't, as usual, reply to it.

As far as your statement about ALL Scandinavian countries having a higher standard of living than Canada,...I would like to see your source.
And now we are down to just Scandinavian countries,...a little while back,...it was all of Northern Europe.

The only one higher than Canada, is Norway,...and to get a picture of how this is accomplished,...here`s a good quote,...``Norway's modern manufacturing and welfare system rely on a financial reserve produced by exploitation of natural resources, particularly North Sea oil.
Before the oil shortage made drilling in the ocean worth while,...Norway was just another little frozen country, with a current population of 5 million people, the size of Newfoundland.,...meaningless !!!

And as far as your idea that the NDP could make Canada better than its now,...shit,...it wouldn`t take 10 years for those idiots to bankrupt the country, the Ontario fiasco make it highly unlikely that they would ever be put in power anyway.
